Re: New Tow Vehicle Recommendations (Work)

Hey!
You got a new trailer?

As above, its going to be one of very few contenders -
Toyota: 70 Series Cruiser, 100/200 Series cruiser (too much $$?), new Hilux?
Other: Ford Ranger (or Everest), umm... Another Patrol?

I'm liking the 70 series, and the Ranger as a non-Toyota option.

I've got a ...

It'll be the high pressure hose down behind the engine - which are straightforward enough to sort out

Re: Caldina Aircon

I am not familiar with Caldinas specifically but Toyotas are known for leaks from the various AC valves - the throttling valves on the jzz and jzx are notorious, and Ive done a bit with the Surfs as well

Have you pulled out the glovebox and checked if the valve has signs of leaking?

Have you ...

Re: 1GFE Idle Speed

Sounds like the IACV is gummed up and seized.
It'll be stuck in the cold idle speed position and can't close off to give the correct hot idle

There should be a light green/light brown box on the throttle body with an oval plug and two phillips screws.
Carefully remove that, and you'll be able to ...

Re: 4AGE turbo fail

FWIW, I have had two different turbos on two different cars smoke due to oil drain issues.

The first one was poor drain design and came right with a re-route of the drain.

The second one was that the sump was overfilled - not by much, but by enough as it turned out - and was using the factory ...

Re: Mazda 6? Legacy? Other?

The BP legacy and outback are dreadful for getting kids in and out of - the wagon glass is long and projects into the rear door opening, making it hard to get kids into their seat

Other than that they're pretty good - they chop through their Front lower arm rear bushes, and all versions like a ...

Re: GS300 Hesitation / Lack of Power

Throttle body problems are common (as above), but have always thrown a CEL in my experience, as its a 'drive by wire' setup and is pretty fussy on PPS and commanded throttle angle vs actual TPS signal

I'd be checking the fuel pressure under load - if I've read it right, and the car starts ...

Re: What to buy??? IS350, Mark X 350S or Aurion?

Aurions are junk I reckon - Avoid! - modern day land crab - fleet car interior, mediocre fit and finish and totally numb to drive, but do have plenty of performance thanks to the 2gr

I vote IS350

Re: Help - blacktop going flat under load

Exhaust blockage?

I had an h22a Accord a while back that was as sweet as a nut until it had been running for 5-10mins, and would then quite distinctly go 'off' and lose all its torque, but as you describe would kinda 'catch' now and then if I back-pedalled it. It was a pig of a thing.

Felt like it ...

Re: Best welder for the job

Forget about the cheap ones - junk - waste of time and money

A second hand Lincoln 170 or Unimig 210 etc would be $1000 well spent if you don't have the budget for new.
The ExcelArc seem pretty good too

Make sure you use the right size wire to suit the type of work you are doing!

Re: Idle Speed Control Valve Block

We're talking the green block on the throttle body?

If so, Ive often found its just gummed up - and just need to be pulled off and cleaned up thoroughly with brakeclean/throttle body cleaner- ideally you remove the electrical block so you can work it manually while cleaning it

Re: OBD2 Scanners

I went down a similar road a couple of years ago and ended up spending ~$5-600 on a PC based scan tool, which is a bit cumbersome but for the occcasional use it gets from me is perfect, and I have yet to find a car that it won;t scan up.

I found that the cheapies only seem to read the standard set ...

Alright, my Megasquirt is back with Bosch direct coil drivers, and Ive just tested with my new coils, and Im getting the same result - no spark at all. Really at a loss to explain this now, because the wiring is very simple now - grounds to one side of the coils, and driver lines from the ECU to ...

Get the one from Amazon?

Stuff arrives pretty quickly and easily

Otherwise, I have found that Toyota frequently stock adapter brackets that match the texture and colour of the dash

They go on much easier than they come off

You will poke holes in your thumbs before you snap one

Just be careful not to drop your nuts and let the ring scratch the piston :D
