looking at getting new toyota

Postby Weel » Sun Feb 25, 2007 8:05 am

Hey, my partner and I are looking at buying a new car, for her as a daily driver/family car. And something I can use on the weekends to tow my race car.

We like the look of these to cars

Toyota Altezza GITA 2001 3.0l engine N/A of course, and a Toyota Caldina 2.0l turbo around the 1998-2000 (i think).

Having never driven either of these cars I would like to hear some opinons on which you think is better, and if they will do everything we need, before we investigate more. Has to be able to tow a race car and trailer, as we dont want seperate tow cars. I am leaning towards the Altezza as it is N/A and think it may handle the job better

3L gitas are an awesome car. i looked at them while choosing my current caldina, but they were a tad out of our price range. they use the same 2jzge as the non turbo supras.
get the gita if you want to tow, probly not wise to stress the caldina with extra weight. it will also use less gas than the turbo caldina.

The 2JZGE motor is a total pig! Driving my Supra with it felt terrible! the Caldina would be better bang for buck if thats a consideration :)

there is nothing wrong with the 2jzge. they still come with 230hp, which is a lot n/a! for a daily for the missus and a tow wagon on weekends, i'd take the gita. she'd probably never use the turbo, and when you're towing, the extra torque lower down and off boost of the 2j would probably suit it better. just remember the 4wd gita's only come auto, so if you're gonna tow, get a decient trans cooler, and it'll tow for miles.

It might be a lot for an NA (see the 2.0 S2000 motor makes more power with one less litre displacement), but the weight of the car makes it seem sluggish.

dads n/a auto supra doesn't feel sluggish, sure it's not a powerhouse, but still goes well enough, and for a daily, nothing wrong with it at all

it helps when u read the thread before you post.

the 2jzge here is not in a supra chassis , its in a gita/altezza , which is significantly lighter than the lardass supra body.
the 3L has more power and torque than any other engine available on that platform, and at 1350ish kg with the 135-145-ish kw atw that the engine makes they are a pretty under rated alternative.

I for one would prefer it over the caldina GTT, and you'll probly find if you do the maths the power to weight ratios are very similar.

1 year ago when we were looking, the gita were sitting at around 25-30k, unsure of pricing now , tho i would expect to be able to find a nice one in the low 20's.

I'd go for the Gita. Caldina might not be as heavy, but remember, this is a towing vehicle. Weight's gonna be added. And the Gita has the low down grunt that you need for towing, and would probably have a better torque curve for towing, where you need that initial low down stuff to start pulling the big load. Its no good having the torque develop later on in the rev range.

Its not all about the peaks :)

From here: http://english.auto.vl.ru/catalog
Altezza (2002 2JZ-GE Auto 2WD):
Curb vehicle weight, kg 1480
.....
Max.power (Net), kw(PS)/rpm 220 ps (161.81 kw) / 5800 rpm
Max.torque(Net), N*m(kg*m)/rpm 30.0 kg*m (294.20 N*m) / 3800 rpm
Power density 6.73

Supra (2001 2JZ-GE Auto):
Curb vehicle weight, kg 1440
.....
Max.power (Net), kw(PS)/rpm 225 ps (165.49 kw) / 6000 rpm
Max.torque(Net), N*m(kg*m)/rpm 29.0 kg*m (284.39 N*m) / 4800 rpm
Power density 6.4

Caldina GTT (2000 3SGTE Auto):
Curb vehicle weight, kg 1470
.....
Max.power (Net), kw(PS)/rpm 260 ps (191.23 kw) / 6000 rpm
Max.torque(Net), N*m(kg*m)/rpm 33.0 kg*m (323.62 N*m) / 4400 rpm
Power density 5.65

BTW the lower power density figure the faster is the vehicle (generally).
Oh and in my opinion Gita would be the best one for towing as it has quiet high torque on low rpms and heaviest vehicle on the list.

fair enuf i was off by a bit, i didnt think the gita would be much more than the altezza, which i have seen weighed in the 1300's. guess the big 6cyl engine adds a lot of weight. still not that much difference between the two tho.

i wouldnt be keen on towing too much with any small displacement turbo vehicle really :?

I wouldn't say that the 2JZGE would be that much heavier than a 3S. A 2J is pretty much a 50% larger 3S! Same bore, stroke, even use the same pistons!

So in theory, you'd ASSUME that it would only be in the region of 50% heavier than a 3S. Most likely less.

Just went and test drove the Gita, went very very well. I was impressed with the power and think as a daily driver it would make a nice car. And then on the other hand as tow car would be just a good. So my mind is made up
