wtd: info on turbo conversion for aw-11

Postby MR2SIK » Tue Jan 11, 2005 7:36 pm

Hey all, I been giving some thought into converting my 4agze aw-11 to turbo, just wondering how anyone else out there did for space between the exhaust manifold and the 'firewall' between engine bay and cabin.
any other info at all would be great, all my searches came up with levins/truenos.
Im just at the 'gathering of info' stage at the moment, so please no flaming posts of 'if you dont know wat you're doin dont bother doin it' bs

cheers

Hey, at least it sounds like a 3s.

Why do you need an ecu and injectors? gmcrae turbocharged his AW11 with a TD04 and ran the stock gze injectors and ecu and apparently said the little car just flew even on moderate boost pressures.

Know a guy Nick who did the conversion on his MR2, don't think he's on the forum, used the 4-AGZE block with a 20V head, custom inlet plenum, custom turbo headers, Link ECU etc, all done himself on a limited budget. Goes bloody brilliant, pumping out bout 240RWHP, and does the 1/4 in 12.4. Might be worth trying to get in contact with him.

injectors might be fine for a lil td04 but the limit is about 250hp. To get much more than this you'll need an upgrade

cheers guys.
If i go ahead with this, it will be done in stages as the budget allows... meaning that Il be keeping as much as possible standard until the need for more power arises, doing the initial conversion and running slightly higher than standard boost (10psi or so) then upgrading fuel/ecu etc wen the $$$ refills, I also have the oppertunity to buy a RS legacy W2A I/C for dirt cheap in a couple of months, would that serve the purpose?

Thanks again :D

stock ecu and injectors will be fine for a small conversion
and will keep the conversion a little easier

guess its all dependant on your budget and what you want

The legacy w/a is an excellent choice. Fits in the stock location (but you need to move the battery), and is ideal for a mid engined car with few options for a/a intercoolers.

Finding the exact spot for the turbo is quite difficult, if you take the engine out then make sure you take good measurements of how much room you have in various directions and take note of things which will get in the way, like shifter cables, clutch lines, oil filter etc. We ended up putting mine above the exhaust manifold, about in line with the distributor, but your placement will depend heavily on what turbo you use

at the moment the only pictures are of an empty aw11 engine bay and a few shots of progress, and none of them are digital yet. I was hoping to have the engine in this weekend but something has come up and I could be busy all weekend on another car.
Anyway once it's back in and running I'll get some pics.
