what gearbox to use

Postby Silvergun » Fri May 06, 2005 1:54 pm

what gearbox can i fit onto ae92 4age corolla that has a lower diff ratio?

Basically my gearbox is stuffed and i wana put something in that will make it rev lower in 5th gear as i cant stand it revving at close to 4k when only doing 110kph.
Are there any boxes that will bolt straight on and achieve what i want?

Silvergun,
If you're pulling 4000rpm to go 110kph you could have either a slipping clutch, the wrong size wheels or a gearbox with a 4.8 final drive ratio.

The correct ratio for your car is 4.312 and by my calculations if you had 185/60-14 tyres you'd be pulling about 3500 rpm at 110k.
Different brand tyres do have different circumferences and there's a wear & presure factor that could come into it as well.

Do you know how to work out the final ratio in your gearbox? If you want help I'm happy to assist. Give me a call or send a pm.

cheers
Bruce

What size wheels do you have?

I had 16's on a ae92 levin and 4000rpm at 110kph was right on.

3500at 100kph. You could just do the speed limit. Don't worry about it too much its not going to hurt you motor, 4000rpm isn't high for a 4age. I did heaps of open road kays (at 4000ishrpm) and it never skipped a beat.

Whats actually wrong with your box?

except that if you're taking the speed off your speedo, then it wont change no matter what size wheels/tyres you have on it, as the speedo assumes tyre size (well, it was built with a certain constant to convert from final drive speed to wheel speed, based on standard size wheels).

It's the circumference of the tires that you need to work out. Just cause you had 16's doesn't mean alot unless we know the profile and width too.

4000rpm sounds like the tires are a bit small, most tacho's tend to over-read too.

Ok good to know, was just giving my wheels as a guide though, can't remember what the size was, 195 x somthing x 16 duhh.

2nd and 3rd synchros are pretty wasted. Seems it's be cheaper to get a second hand box than get the synchros fixed on current box.

Does the 4afe have lower ratio? would it bolt straight on??

Just done this swap 4age box sits 500rpm higher to do a hunner k's so the FE is the percy box of choice.

thanks guys, i like what i hear.

will sort out a box from a wreckers. anyone know a cheap place in wellington region that does them?
Toyota dismantlers in petone want about $270 for a 4age gearbox and they guarantee that its in good condition. Im guessing the 4afe C50 will be similar price from them.

I deal with those guys all the time and i dont reckon thats too nasty, i have had motors, boxes, struts etc etc from them and never had a problem with anything so you get peace of mind, i would tell them that 250 in fold sounds better to me!

Went to the wreckers today - $225 for 4afe box. Looks like il get it done in next couple of weeks.
Anyone sugeest anywhere in hutt valley/wellington that is good for replacing gearboxes?
Would give it a go myself but im likely to mess something up and itll end up costing me more anyway.

If not in a hurry i can but heading to oz for 2 weeks on monday. they arent hard to do except the inner c'vs can sometimes require a sizeable donging device! let me know what you get priced and p.m me if you havent sorted the install in the next 3 weeks.
