power steering belt tension.

Postby rwd_mayhem » Mon Apr 02, 2007 9:37 pm

on my 4age i have a powersteering pump but no air-con, so how does the tensioner work? its in the wrong place - too low, it cant tension up the belt. can i safely just put a belt around just the crank pulley and p/s pulley? ive seen other pumps with a tensioner with them that would work very well but i cant find anyone with one.

its hard to explain i need a photo. but with the tensioner up as high as it can go it wouldnt touch the belt if the belt went straight from p/s pulley to crank pulley. the tensioner pulley isnt ribbed so it cant go on the inside of the belt, if i do put it on the inside, the belt just ends up slipping then get chewed up.[/img]

not sure if this is any help at all, but............

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motor ... 551679.htm

saw this thread, then 5 minutes later saw this, so thought it may be a solution for ya. Even tho you did mention it above, maybe although its not ribbed, maybe it would still work.

third pic. you could always ask what the pic is for

if it is for RWD fitment, then 2nded.
if it's FWD, find a way of tensioning it . have a look at setting the p/s pump up on an adjuster and then getting a belt to suit ?

Is there no way of moving the actual power steer pump in and out from the block to tension the belt?

When I took the power steering off mine I'm pretty sure I used a pully off a 4AFE engine, as it was ribbed so the belt didn't slip off.

just ditch the power steering Wink

really cant be bothered changing the crossmember, having no tools or a place to do it doesnt help either.

it can move inwards a bit but can only be left in one position so i would have to get the perfect length belt.

if you modify the bottom of the bracket so that and alternater-type adjuster can be fitted, surely you will get enough travel to take up slack??

what about getting the other 1/2 of the water pump pully & then going round that the P/S pump & the tensionor in you paint pic

if you havent seen the other 1/2 of the water pump pully it goes infront of what you have now to make a 1 rib belt fit
The faster you go the quicker you get there

im not too sure what the other half of the water pump pulley is but the problem of the tensioner not being ribbed will still chew the belt up.
