Over heating Mr2 - coolant being pushed into overflow

Have you tried replacing the thermostat yet?
If you follow the instructions on various MR2 sites shouldn't you be able to bleed the cooling system yourself?

Its like 30 for a thermostat, just do it................

Easier enough to do in most cars, AW11 included (not sure about SW20 though)

if thermostat is suspect then check radiator when car is hot, it should be hot as well. If you don't mind getting dirty and wet, you could pull the thermostat out and check it in boir try running the car without it to see if it still overheats).
Also maybe your water pump "lost" its impeller?

completely drain the coolant from all four plugs. then refill by what the workshop manual says (google mr2 bgb if you didnt know this). If you are doing everything properly (ie you must use the air drain hoses) then measure how much coolant and water you have put in. In the workshop manual it says the capcity of the system so you should knw if you have a big airlock or not. Although you will probably not get all the water out when you drain so it should be less than the figure in the manual.

If everything is done properly and you still have problems. then my money is on the head gasket blown. it could be the thermo which is easy to check yourself but other than that im pretty certain it is the hg. I had a similar problem.

Is it ever hard to start? Like does it run rough for a few seconds then clear up when you start it?

Its never hard to start and sounds/runs perfectly.

radiators not blocked by any chance is it?

maybe im blind but i cannot see that that has been tested. I had same thing happen to me in a previous car.

also not sure how accesable radiator is in a mr2 but when its overheating, touch radiator and see if any cold spots

Not the correct thing to do on modern cars.

they run a bypass thermostat that closes off a second passage when the thermostat opens,
so with no thermostat, the water will circulate around the block flat out but not go through the radiator.
You can tell this type as they have a flat disc on the back of the thermostat. Most later 90's on toyota's have that.
