Resealing a turbo

Postby Stott69 » Thu Mar 01, 2012 6:07 am

Im asuming by the fact that after a while of not driving the car, it will puff white smoke on start up. How much is dependent on how long since I last drove the car. S o is it worth finding new seals and pulling the turbo apart or should I just save up for a new turbo all together?
Im currently running a DSR430 Gen1 with internal gate on a 2jzgte.

i have the same turbo on my skyline they are common to have the rear seal let go and no you cant get a rebuild or seal kit trust me ive looked

best bet would be get a new turbo

Something genuine ie garrett, borg warner etc

ill be getting a borg for both the levin and skyline when money allows as there a good price (around a grand delivered)

http://www.theboostlab.com/store/catego ... rg-Warner/

look at the s series also email them for better pricing ive had my workmate buy one from these guys no issue :)
Why dream it when you can live it

Are you sure it isnt leaking valve stem seals guys?

If the turbo seals are leaking, you will notice it smoking while driving it as well, not just on start up.

My exhaust side oil seals were rooted on my turbo and it only did it at start up

Maybe it seeps oil when it gets cold and the metal shrinks, then the thermal expansion of the metal when its heated up is enough to stop the seepage?

When an oil seal on a turbo is properly FUBAR, it will smoke like a chimney

Maybe, i got the distinct impression it was oil in the exhaust burning off as the exhaust heated up

Also chris at alltech said they "were a bit rough and could use replacing" not "they are rooted"... so your theory above holds...

how hard are valve steam seals to do? And what is the easyist way to confirm or bust either problem?

You can do the valve stem seals in a day if you know what you are doing, and have all the tools you will need. The TSRM really helps when doing stuff like this :)

I would inspect the turbo to see if there is obvious signs of oil leaking into the turbine housing, and check out the intercooler tract for oil too. If both of those are good, then I would pick your VSS are the culprits.

another way to check for valve stem seals too is go down a hill in gear (the lower gear the better) dont touch the gas all the way down and stomp on the gas at the other end if it lets out a big puff then yeah valve stem seals are naffd

Initial post says white smoke, but everyone is talking about oil.

Is it white smoke, or does it have a blue tinge to it?

oil will white smoke under right conditions ( if its introduced after combustion).

Very common ben.
Seen it Plenty of times,
Very common when exhaust side turbo oil ring go's, or turbo shaft snaps and turbine exits the housing :D

Drip oil on hot surface (exhaust manifold), see what colour it is....

It's definitely turbo imo. rebuilt the head on my 1g when it had leaky valve stems (threw a cam) which stopped it smoking on start-up. Later blew some seal in the turbos and it bellowed white smoke at high boost (ct12s don't handle 20psi O_o) and still chuffed a bit afterwards at lower levels.
