Err.. if the wheel itself wears down, throws itself out of balance at 80,000rpm.. you'll be picking pieces of wheel out of the muffler, after having the car towed home.

Hmmm needs a rebuild me thinks other wise as stated before picking peices out of the exhaust isn't good thing to be doing.

Have heard of skylines loosing exhaust wheels and getting them jammed in the down pipe and causing huge back pressure at the turbo.

Bahahahahaha let it wear itself down do it and see what happen's!!
As everybody else has said you'll be picking bit's out of the back of the car and you'll prob root the turbo housing completely meaning even more money then a rebuild with a machined comp cover and new wheel etc if you were to do it now..

Yeah but it must have become off balanced so what's saying it's not going to get any worse causeing even more damage??

chances are that if it's touching the housing then there is too much play in the bearings, this could lead to a very severe failure due to wobble at high RPMs. Fix it *nod*

The other possibility is that the shaft is slightly bent, which is even worse

exhaust housings cracked so id say its shifted slightly over time. ill grind it out anyway and see what happens. turbos are cheap as anyway so doesnt matter if it fuks out.

What makes you think that it hasn't worn down to the point it is now and has maybe only a few more k's left in it anyway.

It won't just wear down the wheel either it will do the housing in as well not a good thing for a poor turbo to experience. 8O

Yes, but isnt there the possibility of:

Your engine oil getting metal in it, and circulating it through the engine?
or
Bits of turbine blade entering the intake/intercooler/engine/etc, if the turbo has a catastrophic failure?

RomanV is right imagine a large bit of impellar wheel flying in your inlet manifold and into your cylinders then getting it jammed between the piston and block sure it's fine if your wanting to rebuild your engine new block and all.

Imagine it seperated - only slightly enough to jam your impeller side somehow, impeller wheel flys to bits and then you get what he said - doens't matter it's all imaterial now that you've found the fault and fixed it. Turbo's can do funny things tho!
