16V 4AG water temp sensor help!

Postby aesc » Thu Nov 03, 2005 1:21 pm

Hi,

Can anyone tell me where abouts this is located on 4age/4agzes? I think I may have found it, there are two what look to be sensors close together located on a pipe coming out from the gearbox side of the head (one green and the other is orange or brown). But when I unplugged them I expected the temperature gauge in the dash to stop working but it didnt so that kinda makes me think that either of the sensors I unplugged are not water temp? Can someone point me in the right direction in finding it, or even better post up a pic of where it is?

Also can anyone confirm what size socket it requires to remove it and what size the thread is? Ill be teeing in a water temp gauge and need to know what the NPT/BSP fitting size is.

Cheers

where your dipstick is...near the waterpump, its just above there, next to the inlet manifold. 17mm socket/spanner will do the trick. unsure of thread offhand sorry.

green one is temp ecu afaik, not sure about other one. some 16v's only have the one in that position above the gearbox...maybe the other is the high temp line pressureup switch?...not sure.

Some 4ages have the temp gauge sensor at the pulley end of the engine.
The ecu temp sensor is at the back of the head as you described.
The other sensor near the ecu one might be the cold injector thermo timer switch (causes the cold injector to inject fuel until the the thermo timer switch senses warm water the shuts it off.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

Green plug in the casting in the rear of the head is for the ECU, brown one is cold start, this in the pic is water temp for your guage.

Yeah, I think I found it right after I posted the request up last night

Looks like I could be struggling to fit a tee down there though for both sensors, there isnt much room, not on my gtz anyway

Can the sensor be unplugged?

Yeah I know, I'm now thinking that is the easier option. I have PM'd TWSTD about one, I need to know what size sensor they accept before buying though. might need a custom made one

I have tried testing but its kinda hard to tell, but does the water in the top radiator hose warm up with the engine before the car gets to normal operating temp i.e before the thermostat opens?

could always hold each raidator hoses (watch that radiaor fan), and feel which one warms up first :D
