Postby ZE WAGON » Mon Apr 02, 2007 8:16 am

hi i have a standard ae101 levin with a silvertop and it seems to be using quite a bito oil and smokeing aswell, i was wondering what would be the main cause and what the easiest solution would be?..full head replacement or piston rings perhaps..

cheers for ya help.

what colour is the smoke?
if it has lots of black smoke under load and is a prefacelift silvertop then the cause might be in the injectors. If it is the case then idle will be rough as well with random stalls under hot conditions.

Been down that road with a few prefacelifts. Yeah facelift injectors seem to fix that problem. If you pull out facelift and prefacelift and compare you will see the difference in hole size and distance of the business part. Cleaning them does not work. It just bad design. I had 4 set of prefacelift injectors in my possesion and all of them were bad - caused to smoke and idle funny.
You could check them by unplugging each injector (one at a time) and see how much difference it makes.

just to give you an idea of what could be wrong, my 20v was using oil like a bitch, did a compression test and it was perfect.
The compression rings were fine, just the oil control rings were stuffed and I was getting blow-by, replaced rings and it hasn't used any oil since

I don't thing you will have to take the crank out.
Just undo the bigends and rotate the crank out of the way to get the pistons out.

have you ever done that with any sucess??

You will need to pull the head and poke them out from underneath.

Block and Crank can stay in the car.

just for fureture referance....
oil control rings scrape teh bore to stop the oil getting to teh compressiomn rings
compression rings stop blowbye and give compression...they work both ways(up and down) but if the oil control rings let any oil past it will make them "float" on the bores and in turn the oil that makes them float on the downstroke then gets burnt in the combustion process making blue smoke
white or grey smoke is normally a indicator of bad valve stem seals

blue smoke = been though a hot combustion process
white smoke = added after the compression/combustin cycle

white mist comming from the rocker cover is also a indicator of stuffed riings
this is from the "flame"bypasssing the rings and buring the oil on the cylander walls...its actaully smoke generated from the singed oil

Not sure, I got a professional to do it, I also replaced bearings, gaskets etc, so about $1000 + parts
