Bonnet clearance I assume, possibly weight distribution reasons.

Yea, that was the impression that I got.

i was just under the assumption some toyota factory assemblers were larkign about with a 3S-GE and an engine stand and it fell into a car engine bay while they were trying to hit guys with a flying engine and it was 4.30 on a friday and they just went "eh close enough" and welded that $&#$% in there - and they just did that from then on ;)

its what id do if i worked at toyota, so must be right :D
The four seasons in Australia consist of "$&#$% it's hot", "Can you believe how $&#$% hot it is?", "I won't be in today because it is too $&#$% hot" and "Yes, the dinner plate size spiders come inside to escape from the heat."

It's quite a tall motor otherwise!

Leaning it over makes sense, seeing as how they were only ever in transverse layout up until the Altezza.

(Not counting 1S and 2S, of course)

If they had laid it on its side, would it sound like a Subaru?

All the above plus I read somewhere that it improves balancing and somehow raises the torque slightly.

Well, 190nm is slightly on the lower side of what I'd expect from a twin cam 2 litre N/A

I presume you're referring to the 26yr old versions still running on the original bearings and rings?
You forget a) Those motors had T-VIS which extended it throughout the rev range. b) The ST162 has a 250kg weight advantage over the ST182,202 etc

Purely for lower bonnets/frontal area.
Nothing to do with oil draining or more torque. How does that work? :?
Although as Sergei mentioned it does help the oil drain down the back of the block

No, I'm referring to Toyota factory figures.

I think it's so any BHG that leaks out, runs down the side of the block rather than into the piston bore chambers.

All of the oil galleries which drain the oil back down from the head down to the sump again, are on one side of the engine.

This works well enough, because the engine is tipped over to drain the oil in that direction.

When you stand it up, it cant drain the oil out of the head quickly enough and the whole thing fills with oil hahaha.

Altezza motors have got an additional external oil drain from the head back to the sump for this reason, as well as (apparently) smaller diameter oil feed lines to the head.

About the more torque thing... Hmm, pistons arent pushing against gravity as much?

But that means that gravity isn't helping pull the pistons down on a firing strong as much!
