wheel polishing, good place to go in auckland ?

Postby AE85.6 » Mon Apr 05, 2004 8:40 pm

i know there a number of places round Aucks that do this but anyone know of a reasonably priced place or place that did a good job and that may paint the inbetween bits black as one place i went in the past for some old toyota wheels has like tripled its price !!

or any metal polishers by trade here ???

the wheels i had in mind are some old celica/supra 15s

if you are going to polish it yourself, make sure you dont heat the meta too much, it will $&#$% up your wheel completely... but to polish yourself, go get 'em acid dipped, then pul out a grinder with a polishinng bit and polish away :D

what acid dipped dipping something in acid is to remove burn marks from welding or to harden steels dip ur mags in acid and ur a $&#$% fool

just get a good hand held polisher and make sure u hold it rock steady and keep it flat or at the same angle always these three polishing wheels to use a flat wheel to remove scratches and marks and a 2nd cut wheel to sand it finely and then a polishing wheel put some autolos or similar all over the wheels the add heaps of wax to the polishing wheel and always go in the same direction and angle or keep it flat just go nuts with the polish wheel remember when u think the good enough start again it will take $&#$% ages to make them look primo but its rewarding when they finally ive did a friends and spent 18 hours doing they but it was well worth it they looked awesome

you dip them in acid to remove the old paint off them. if you try and polish mags that are painted (which most are except for old school ones) it will take you an eternity (like 18hrs) without dipping them. i had mine acid dipped before i got them powder coated to remove the paint they had on them and they came out great. stripped back to the bare alloy. i dont know where you get the idea that acid dipping is to harden steels. usually thats done by heating in a carbon solution and quenching in oil or water

the guy in parity place is the cheapest around afaik, and its more like $80-100 per wheel not $20-25. you can get powder coating done for $25 and they have a full range of colours including a polished/chrome colour but that costs a bit more

if you wannna do it yourself get them dipped in a cold acid bath/paragon tank, sand them smooth with some wet and dry sand paper or if you have an angle grinder use that with a sanding wheel on it and then once its smooth and all the pitting is gone sand them with a really fine sand paper like 600 or 800 grit and then polish the sh!t out of them with some autosol and buffing wheel on the angle grinder

it's not $20 a wheel!!!! $20 is do just the outer rim part if u got deep dish type mags.
Metro Hard chrome does full wheel polishing for something like $80-90 a mag.
