valve clearane

Postby phatman3801 » Fri Apr 23, 2004 10:18 am

hey i have a levin bzg, i started to notice a ticking noise when driving corrasponding to hte revs so i got it checked out and im told it is the valuve clearance on a couple of the valves and the shims will need 2 b replaced, it sounds like it wil be rather expensive to fix so is it doing ne harm jst leaving it? will it affect the performance of the car?? or is it jst annoying ticking noise i have 2 put up with and thats it?

hey Phatman , shims not to bad to do and shouldn't be to expensive $5 -$15 each ? Can usually be done without removing anything major - ie only requires valve covers to be removed. But needs SST's (Special Service Tools)to do the job. Should only take about an hour or so ! Take it down to your local Toyota Dealer and get them give you a quote !
Mainly annoyance factor if just slight ticking but if left could develop into valve clearance problems which could effect your performance and reliability :!:

Umm, the 20 valve uses under bucket shims which means the cams will have to be removed. I doubt the noise is excessive valve clearance however.
I would be putting my money on the vvt pulley being a little rattly as thats a common fault.

yeah they are valve under bucket style. if its the vvt pully then it wont be ticking. they make more of a knock or a slow rattle.

Most likely the VVT pulley but I haven't heard a noisy blacktop one yet - not one worth worrying about anyway. The noise normally disappears when VVT engages but you will need a VVT switch to test this.

Is the price the same for a blacktop and silvertop VVT pulley?

the differnece between the blacktop vvt pulley from the silvertop is only the timing.
The only diff is 5 degrees lobe centre so if you can redrill the hole you could save $142

Does anyone know what the factory specs are for valve clearances on a silvertop?
I have been told 10 and 10 and also 14 and 17 but need some reliable info.
