link vs linkplus vs microtech

Postby Dori_85 » Wed Apr 28, 2004 11:26 pm

hey all, just wanting everyones opinion on what would be the best choice for a 4agte. cause i bought a custom manifold + td05 for my ae85 so im getting there  and i just got a job at a radiator and intercooler workshop so theres the all the cooling sorted . next stop nite parts for a diff. but anyway back to the main point.
ive heard lots of different stories from reputable workshops and retailers about "we did a sr20det with a microtech and it worked wonders" or "i know a guy who hooked up a linkplus in his blah and it went like a rocket". as there telling me this im thinking 'shut up, i dont care about nissans or hondas or mazdas etc, i want to know whats best for a toyota'.
so all of u guys with 4agte's could u give me an idea on whats a good easily tunable ecu. i know those 3 r all roughly $1000 to $1800.
i know of only 3 people with 4agte's on the is forum being EVLGTZ(link?), takumi(link or linkplus)) and drifter4ag(not sure). so y is it that i havnt heard of anyone using microtech on 4a's?

im going to stop rambling and wait for some replys. .

cheers

yup I'm using Link EM4 and no issues what so ever, pretty happy with it but then again I haven't got anything else to really compare it against other than the std ecu

Drifter4ag has LInk EMX but may be upgrading this at the mo?

EP714AGTE is using Linkplus.

And theres a few good tuners around (locally) for these which is definitely something that needs to be taken into consideration

basically, a computer is a computer. and i actually have it on good authority that microtech's are *extremely* similar to LEM's... nothing like a good bit of industrial espionage. they actually appear to use the *same* micro which is interesting considering how microtech markets them... but thats a story for another day.

all of them will do what you want, its just down to the details. dont be influenced by stuff like clock speed and whether its 8/16/32 bit - just look at the list of functions, and if it does what you want, voila.

personally, id go with links, because ive had dealings with them, and because they're local, better customer support. but microtechs will do the job just as well.

lol! Ive got 1 of em and they a big piles of poooh, soooo old skool and difficult to tune, but cheap, mate got his last one with hand controll for 100 bucks....unless you have a so called "rom editor" the hand control unit can only be used to tune it on the go. ie to tune he 4000rpm 0-5psi boost range you have to actually be in that range. its a right pain in the ass and can be quite dangerous if you dont get it right first time. Usually start hella rich and tune down from there.
Anyway it is 10 or so years old.

EP714AGTE, if your upgrading give me a buz, could be keen to get another off you :)

im most probably going to go with microtech cause my work has an sr20det in a race boat with a microtech and they have hand controllers, lap tops etc to tune them. i just wanted to know if anyone was using microtech with 4a's to see how different the tuning abilitys are between link etc.
cheers for the input

I'll be sticking with my linkplus, thanks anyway.

I've been talking to a Link specialist recently and apparently the 4a's well suited to Links (or links are well suited to 4ag's :D ) with install and tune being quite straight forward. Not sure how microtechs go but I'd assume they would be similar in functions/ease of use. All down to personal preference possibly.

yeah true, i think the sole purpose for me will be that the microtech will be easyier to tune because of laptop etc at work and i can learn how to do it myself instead of paying some a couple of hundred each tme i want to tune it for different occasions :D .

cheers

Also have a look at the MAPECU and a Megasquirt ECU. MT Karl Skewes from this forum is utlilising a Megasquirt with great results. He's got a brilliant detailed article on his website if your interested. Its fairly easy to setup and also has the bonus of laptop tunability.

im gonna use megasquirt, its cheap, diy, and self programmable.
already got it going with the simulator, just gota finish the engine and wire it up. you buy the chip pre-programmed, so tuning is all thats needed. free downloadable software means i can do it from my own laptop for free.
Karl Skewes article is what got me interested, just read about and it shouldnt cost anymore than $500 all up.

yeap, EMX gets results for drifter4ag.
Megasquirt for me.
Might even update the article in another week or two...

Everyone around me goes Links, so if I didn't have a MS, I'd have a link cos the support is there.
