Won't it be keeping hot air from entering your intake to some extent, however? (uneducated guess)

go right ahead, but be prepared burn the paint off the bottom of your hood, and if its really hot then the top as well, and to add insult to injury it will heat soak the rest of your engine bay, say goodbye to cold air

na na its located where the manifolds exit the engine. i think it stops the heat from burning your hands if you touched them for some reason. it just looks silly. and i dont want hot air in the manifold anyway. cold is betta.

perhaps if i do remove it and buy and aftermarket bonet with air scoops on it to cool it down? like a gt4 bonnet. its just in the way and would be easier to turbocharge it if it were gone.

When the exhaust gases are hot they actually flow better, which means that the exhaust gases will leave the exhaust system faster which in turn means more power. You don't want to cool the exhaust manifold down because you will slow the exhaust gases down.

It's not there to stop people burning themselves, the heat shield will still do a good job at that, don't believe me? Do try it.
It's there to keep the heat around the manifold area so that it doesn't heat up the engine bay too much which in turn can damage your wiring loom, sensors, alternator etc
If you don't like the look of your heat shield you could get it HPC coated/polished or heat wrap the factory extractors if you have an ST182 Celica GTR

dont know about north shore (my auckland geography skills suck) but its common knowledge that segedins on dominion road do a ripping trade, what ever you do dont buy from repco (ripco), if your after it really cheap then i hear the best bet is to find a plumbing/home ventilation specialist as they sell the stuff bulk for good prices, its basically asbestos weaved into a fabric (correct me if im wrong)

Wrong :)
It says "contains no asbestos" on the instructions
Cost me $15.97 for 2" x 10FT roll and $26.87 for 1" x 25FT roll from Segedin a week ago.

Road and Track in Lower Hutt sell a heat wrap that is made of woven glass fibre for $11 per metre. They recommend painting it after wrapping to keep water from getting in and rusting the headers. turns out to be quite an expensive exercise with the can of HiTemp paint being $27

Yeah the stuff they sell at segedins says you need to use a heat proof paint on the pipes before hand to prevent rusting and to help the tape to stick to them.
But you can buy cans of high heat spray paint from most autoplaces for reasonably cheap.

Oh and on the heat sheild removal subject, dont do it unless your gonna shield the exhuast manifold, 'cause without it your altenator wont last more than a few months
