Question: Toyota Curren, what do these buttons do?

Postby VTEXTC » Tue Jun 08, 2004 9:10 pm

Hey guys,
My mums just got herself a 1997 (i think) Toyota Curren, 2l SOHC i believe, Auto.

Anyway, next to the Auto Gearlever ther is a button that if pressed, a light on the dash showing this
ECT-S
PWR

in green, and if the switch is pressed the other way,
ECT-S
MAN
(i think)
in orange
What exactly does this do? Also if you press it in the middle they both turn off. Just curious as to what it means, and does.

One more button, just above these two, is a Red buttin with some Japanese writing under it, when pressed doesnt appear to do anything at all.

Being a Honda boy im not to certian about the Toyota stuff.. and thort Toyspeed be a good place to start :)
Anyone know?

Cheers Guys

Yeah, I've got the same setup on my car, even though it is a Cynos :P
The red button with the Japanese writing on it is for changing gear if required when the key is not in the car.
My understanding of the Power & Manual buttons is how quickly the car accelerates before changing into a higher gear.

Correct me if I'm wrong

yeah... thats basically right...

red button with jap writing means you can move the shifter without the key

ECT stands for Electronic Controlled Transmission... and pwr is power man is manual

power will stay in lower gears longer... more sporty, better acceleration and man is the opposite

Also, I'd say it's highly unlikely to be a SOHC :)
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

the ect manu is for snow or other surfaces that are slippery basicly holds it in a lower gear so it doesent spin to start off with.

Not quite. Power allows the rev's to get higher on full throttle before changing gear, and also changes down more readily on acceleration.

Manual mode is just a mode that allows you to select which gears to use. For example, if you put it in 1, it'll start in 1 and will rev until it hits the limiter. If you put it into 2 you'll start in 2 and stay in 2. If you put it in drive, it'll drive drive really conservatively.

when i first got my 'yota (Carina ED) i thought it was a sohc because of it's size (knowing nothing about 3sfe motors) but yeah they're just a very small dohc head :D

The Toyota FE head (regardless of what block it is on) is the "Economy" cylinder head, with a small angle between the inlet and exhaust valves. The GE head is the performance head, with a larger angle between the inlet and exhaust - which is why is is much wider.

The Totoya V6, V8 and V12 engines all have FE heads because it's a bit tricky to get the fat GE heads on and be able to do the intake plumbing nicely.

hmmmmmm 1GZ-GTE (5L, V12, twin tubo....) if only....
