inner rack ends on AE82- help on fixing?

failed wof due to play in both inner rack ends. how do i replace them, and how much for the parts (shops closed now).

is it hard tro do, and do i need a wheel alignment afterwatrds, as i jusyt had one last week, with my new tyres!!

WHere is the play? in the tie rod ends or in th steering rack?
Have a power steer steering rack for sale if you need one, (out of my 1985 FXGT with a genuine 140,000km on it so pretty much mint!!)

the guy didnt explain it to me well, its the steering rack inners, not the tie rod ends, ive done this before on my old corolla, but it sux cos i just had a wheel alignment last week! im gonna clean it up[, and say i put another one in, worth a try!!

does it have the power steering stufff to go with it??

dam when i got my wheel alinment one of mine were stuffed on my ae82 and they told me and fixed it. good buggers

well ive sent an email to tony's tyre service outlaying my complaint that their tecniction didnt find it or didnt tell me about it, and asked what their position on my compliant is.

Racks ends are usually pretty easy to swap. Normally a case of unscrewing the old ones and screwing the new ones in and putting on new boots (usually in with the kit). Definately advisable to get the tracking done after. Much cheaper to do that than replace a tyre

If your real short on cash, take them off the rack and on the inner ball joint 'skillfully' hit around the housing with a hammer. Its a pretty old trick to firm them up again & will last for quite a while.
If youve got the $$ then replace them
If you do the first method carefully and measure it all up you could get away with not geting the alignment re-done. If youre replacing them than yea, id get another front alignment, as above.

you shouldnt need an alignment afterwards, as long as you put the tie rods back on the amount they came off - you can either count the turns or measure the amount of thread they covered. just make sure the new rack ends go on nice and tight

if you're worried about it, then i reckon tonys at the very least could do a new alignment for ya for free... since the one they DID do for you is basically worthless.

ok, tony's tyre service have offered to refund my wheel alignment i get done up in tauranga, adn have given me a free wheel alignment for my next visit.

I did my steering rack ends recently on my ae82 and it only cost $60 for the parts. My boots were OK tho, so I didn't replace them.
You will need another wheel alignment after changing them.

i would think its stupid to not change the boots now...

save having to do them again and save from not having to get another alignment.

Rack boots are what? $10 each?

Don't know how much the boots were, but yeah... if they are $10 each it would make sense to replace them as well.
