Postby PoMmY » Tue Jul 06, 2004 10:04 pm

Hey guys/gals

Im currently rebuilding a 4age 20 silvertop and am beginning to take the camshafts off, unfortunately the bolts holding them on are making me look like a right **^%^$# tard, can anyone and everyone suggest as many ideas as possible to get a bolt off, and dont say turn it!lol

Cheerz everyone :D

P.S Or is there somethin else that needs to come off in order to take the bolts out????

Assuming there's nothing else that has to be done before removing the bolts.

Get sum1 to hold a real good quality socket(on a ratchet) on the bolt, get a big $&#$% hollow bar  , put it on the end of the ratchet and turn. You'll either get it undone, break the ratchet or socket or even snap the bolt. I've broken heaps of ratchets doing this so make sure you use a good quality one (ie: not Supacheap  )

You will most definitely need a decent power bar. Even if you have a decent ratchet, why would you use it on a tight bolt? They aren't made for undoing super tight bolts, that's what your power bar is for. If the ratchet doesn't break, you will certainly be doing damage to the ratchet mechanism.

I hope you also realise that there is a special procedure for removing the camshafts from the cylinder head. You should remove the cap bolts in a sequence, like the head bolts. The service manual provides a spec as to what position in degrees the camshaft should be in when the camshaft is to be removed (in terms of valves open and closed etc). You want the camshaft(s) to lift up evenly, otherwise you can quite easily damage the thrust faces of the camshaft and your thrust clearance will be all up the wop in which case it will either be noisey or could seize.

I strongly suggest you consult the service manual for the correct procedure for disassembly.

Cheers,

Mike.

there is another trick,

use a welding torch or similar, and heat the surrounding metal (so it expands) apparently it then becomes much easier to take off)

My mates used this trick all the time, I've never tried it myself,

so all care no responsibility.

Few alright ideas there, and im guessing these power bars can be picked up from a local hardware store? Repco?

Ok new question, if a bolt is rounded to the state that wrenches and spanners dont work  What to use then?

hehe, my bad :D

a 6 point impact socket. if that cant get it you have to cut it off, drill it and use a stud remover like ezy-out or something or else try get vise-grips on it. also when purchasing a powerbar make sure you get one with a warranty.

Ok cheerz, il see what i can find.

O and thanks Crimson, i had little idea of this and was about to ask a few people, i dont have the manual but have a 4age rebuild manual so surely that will have it. Because im replacing them with other TRD items, will they need to be put in professionally, or can i do this with a bit of reading and advice?

lol no dont worry, i talked to you bout this not long ago, i perhaps included irrelevant info. I am looking at putting certain TRD items in this engine, but not cams.

And dont worry, ill contact you when i have the money. Ive heard you are pretty good with deals. :D

thats all cool then, wasnt worried about who you buy it off... more that some ones gunna con you.

theres been a few 'TRD' parts sold that arnt TRD, then when they dont perform as such pl think TRD arnt as good as they are. thats my main concern!

Not from here there haven't. So I hope you're not trying to discredit anybody unfairly, Warwick.
It is certainly important to deal with the agents. I do agree.
Not only for the best price, but the best advice as well.
