last i check you can jump start an efi car without the surge protecting thingees - as long as the negative lead is not earthed on the battery - better to earth it on another part of the car

Has anyone actually heard of anyone first hand that's damaged their electronics by jump starting to/from a EFI car?

I say this, because in the 10 years that I've been driving, owned EFi cars for half that, and everyone I know, has never had a problem jumping?

there is a risk of blowing ecus and modules in an EFI car if you dont use the proper leads though it rarely happens i have seen it happen before to some ford shagged the fuel injection. but yes it can happen

Exactly - never heard of an instance...

Other than me shorting the terminals on a collueagues car.. was a GTS25t Skyline and i ended up blowing most his fuses, had no power steering / or 4 wheel steering or some shit to drive home on :o - my bad ;)

But yeah.. i have jump started all my cars (2 x AW11 MR2's and one JZA70 Supra) and never had problems.

We've never had it happen here at work, but we've just brought some computer safe leads, just in case...
Hate to fry the electrics in one of those new Peugeot 407's, a computer alone is $8k!

If you have the choice, use the safe leads, otherwise just put the negative on the chassis, as already mentioned

know this might sound stupid, but on which car do you put the negative on the chassis instead of the battery? the car doing the jumping, or the car being jumped?

I remeber a lady coming into albany mitsubishi after she had attempted to jumpstart her 1990 older shape diamanti (spelling_)
turned out not only was the jumpstarting the killer of her computer but also the heater core was leaking on it

I've never seen it happen(jumpstarted many cars)but I have no doubt there's bound to be the odd occasion that it has.

No harm in being careful though is there?

I am an auto electrian and so jump start heaps of cars all the time.
Never use those so called safe leads as if you know what you are doing you dont need them.
Most faults are dumb arses briefly connecting the jump battery backwards.

The next thing that most people do wrong is have the car that they are jump starting from running. This is a big no no as this is what causes spikes and damage to ecu's.

Another Auto-Sparky here, Matt Dunn is on the money on this one. The only way people do damage is by hooking them up wrong. :D

Matt, does that mean you can jump the flat batt without the sweet car actually running? I mean I see why that makes complete sense, though like gtuwet said, aren't you running the risk of flattening their battery too?

yes but if the car that you jump start, will ( should ) start pretty quick and so wont drain the battery. If it has another problem and you have to crank it for ages it may drain it down a bit but then there is obviously another problem with the car.
