How does auto react to more power ??

Postby jondee86 » Sat Jul 31, 2004 11:20 am

Does anyone have any first hand experience with ugrading the engine performance on an automatic car ?? For example, if you upped the power on an auto Soarer from 200 hp to 300 hp, how does the auto react to the increased power ??

Here I am talking about a reasonably late model car that will certainly have some degree of electronic control, probably from the engine ECU. Will the box still shift normally at about the same revs if you put more load on it ??

Any auto gearbox technicians out there :?:

Cheers....

but in america when they power up autos, they have aftermarket torque converters etc

Yeah.... good point. Not that I ever looked inside an auto box, but I figure that bigger engines will need bigger torque converters. Wonder how much margin there is on a standard converter ??

I'm thinking that there must be signals going from the ECU to the box telling it when to change based on engine rpm and load.

So, since throttle opening and engine revs would be similar on the 200 hp and 300 hp engines (at full power), maybe the box would shift normally....

Has anyone put NOS on or turbo'd an auto ??

Cheers...

Give me 6 months and I'll tell you if mine is still together!
I have an SR20DET powered Avenir (factory), auto that I plan on screwing another 50 hp or so outta, making about a 20-25% increase. I don't think that will make too much difference to the box.
If it does, I'll let ya know!
