Looking to purchase a 3sgte....

Postby WALT3R » Fri Aug 13, 2004 11:30 pm

Hey guys. I have a 1990 celica gt4 group a. Its shit itself big time. Iv been advised to look for anotha engine (its the big ends, will work out cheaper in the long run to get a new engine). Does anybody know of any up for grabs????? Turbo, intercooled, E-ST185H-BLI1NZ, 3SGTE. I am based in rotorua, but im sure freight will not be a problem so yeh, location is not an issue. I will need some sort of certification that shes a good'un, as you will understand. Thanks a lot. If u can find me sumthing that ends up worthwhile a box ov beers is in it for you. 8)

If it's just the bigends... surely you could get that fixed for less than the $1300 to $2500 you're gonna have to pay for a new engine? regardless of what you do the labour will be about the same.... good excuse to get the internals upgraded or just replaced as all gen II's are getting on now and whatever you get could succumb to the same problem leaving you $&#$%. So unless something has smashed the block up or made gouges where there shouldn't be gouges.... repair the old one(you also get a lovely warranty thingy) but if you do need 'nother one Mr Revhead is real connected and goodly in prices too.

I'd see it as a perfect excuse to throw a set of forgies in it and get it all nicely balanced. As chickenman said, you get a warranty, and you basically have a brand new engine, not another old one that could sh*t itself in a years time.

the bigends have gone in such a way that a piston is smaking the cylinder head. i could get it repaired for the same amount as a new engine, but then theres the ongoing problems, eg oil pump... it goes on and on, the little things. Cameron from A head cylinder head specialists (probly the most on to it chap in roto) said my best bet is a new engine and recondition it. will be back on the road quicker as well.... and my friend? forged pistons are in practically every car these days, i think these engines are forged standard. if ur upgrading pistons? TITANIUM is the one haha.

3sgtes dont have forged pistons standard, they are cast.

They do have forged rods and crank tho, near bulletproof once cleaned up.

hav u considered upgrading to a gen 3 engine? if u didnt wanna fork for a rebuild etc then could be an option...buy the engine+ecu and ud be sussed.. has the advantage of the bigger turbo , better intercooler etc.also being newer u have more chance of getting one in good condition.gen 2 3sgte's are getting on a bit now.

ahahaha
How do the bigends go in such a way that the piston is smacking the cylinder head? Did you take the sump off and loosen the bearing caps or something? or has the whole conrod or crank distorted so much that the stroke has increased a few mm?

and no, forged pistons aren't in practically every car, and even if they were your car is still 14 years old which hardly puts it in the bracket of "these days"

Iv talked to a chap about that. It will fit, but there will be a hundred million little things that you have to change, waaaay too much $&#$% around. sound advice for anyone upgrading an engine, instead of putting a newer engine in, just buy the newer car. so nobody can help me with an actual engine? iv found a few, but looking for the best mileage, waranty, price....

I wouldn't be so sure about that. There is reasonable evidence that the 3SGTE pistons are made the same way as 4AGZE pistons (hyperutectic semi-solid forged IIRC).

Yep, unless you have a complete donor vehicle, I would agree with that.

Try remove the big end bearing in your 3S-GTE, it will.... bah, screw it, why should I educate you?

you could buy my whole car for $1500 keep the engine and sell everything else if you have the time. you will probably make $1000 back from it. it is in the mount too so you don't have to go far to get it.
