K series tappets. WTF??

Postby kingcorolla » Sat Aug 21, 2004 11:04 pm

my mate just brought a 198x KP starlet Si. Its gotta 4K-EU. Id seen pictures of an injected 4k but not in person. He claimed the tappets were a mile out, which could of been the case coz it was gutless, and LOUD tappet noise. He asked me diagnose, and fix the prob (for a price ov course) so i jumped at the chance, to work on a 4k-eu for the first time.

Anyway, his old lady took them to a mechanic for a check, and he claimed it was WAS the tappets, and was not an easy job as we had predicted. (coz k series tappets are piece 'o' cake)

he claimed that COZ IT WAS INJECTED...it had hydrolic tappets..?
its still the old side cam, pushrodder, with rocker arm, but i dont know why being fuel injected, it has to have hydrolic tappets? anyone worked on one before?

Yes some 4k and 5k do have hydraulic tappets and are non adjustable.

As to if the 4k injected is....... possibly but have to lift the tappet cover to see.

f'kin aye. I just thought the way he sed "its injected, so IT HAS hydrolic tappets"..didnt sound rite. I dont even think he had a look. ( u gotta take the whole t/body/manifold off to get to the rocker cover.)

i hope its not hydrolic, coz i hate checking and replacing shims. :x

The 5k that i had in bits that had hydraulic was non adjustable.
They dont have shims or anything to replace.
The lifters are filled by oil pressure to take up the clearances, so if the clearances aren't right you need to replace the lifter.
