Why did my speedo die?

Postby Stealer Of Souls » Wed Aug 25, 2004 3:51 pm

Hey there,
Well my speedo has just died... and only two weeks till WOF time...
So what could it be? The speedo is the only thing that has stopped working on the entire dash cluster...
My first thought was speedo cable... Is there anything else it could be? I have been mucking around with anything for months so it's unlikely I stuffed something up...
Help...

My digital speedo (standard) randomly reads zero every now and then, and then comes back completely inconsistently.

Its not the speedo cable connection to the gearbox cos i've checked that but i havent bothered to take the dash apart to check if its that end.

Only thing i can think of that mine could be would be the connection behind the speedo or some electrical fault/connection.

Do you have a normal mechanical gauge or digital? Because I may have the same problem as you :x

try this, take the instrument cluster out, run a wire from speedo input, to the other end of speedo drive cable (gearbox) and test for continuity with a multimeter. Keep going up the line, probing anywere along the cuircut were u can till u find the break.

that, or speedo drives fukd

Pull the dash and make sure the cable is attached to your speedo properly. The same thing happened on my Hiace, just after it would jump up and down 5k either way of actual speed, then it did what yours does then died completely - when it of course fell off the end. That's probably your problem.

Tee hee...
I'm silly...
After investigating the cost of building a custom dash cluster (something I wanna do at some point anyways) I decided to try and track the problem down...
Sure enough the speedo cable connection to the box wasn't done up properly and had come off...

Tee hee... i'm such a dork...
