Blacktop 20v, anybody had probs with flat spots?

Postby NILPSI » Sat Aug 28, 2004 9:52 pm

As the title sudgests, my 20v seems to be very unhappy between 3000 and 4000 rpm most of the time, when its cold especially!!

When u get to around 3000 it starts coughing and splutering and backfiring really badly mostly when its cold, when it warms up you just get an extremely noticable hesitation!

Any help would be great as i feel like selling it, its pissing me off so badly

Cheers

Have you done the usual stuff?

i.e. spark plugs, spark leads, air filter, fuel filter...

Could also be a sensor. I'd be checking the ECU codes.

mines absoutly gutless and jerky at low rpm + cold

i can balance the jerk from touching the throttle earlier during geardchanges, almost into burn the clutch tetorioty, but the revs dont jump or burn, and the car becomes very smooth, as it heats up and you rev higher, compensate by touching the throttle later.

this is what ive done, resulting in a very good drive, nice and smooth

apart form the bloody hard suspension and low profiles, hey look! a flyshit! *bang* $&#$% man, were flying :D

My AE111 sounds like a backfiring subaru driving down the hill on cold mornings until it warms up, I've changed plugs, leads, fuel filter etc etc.......

Once its warm its not a problem, i try and let the car warm up usually before i drive it and dont have a problem, its hard if your running late for work though!

Yea while its cold it does it, but unless its been running for mabee 30 minutes strait it still does it even when its warm, yes ive done plugs, fuel filter and its got a K&N pod on it (in custom airbox), i got my fault codes checked and it was showing up the rpm signal out of the dizzy, a mechanic friend cleared it but it still does it, ive heard from lith that i may need a new sensor in the dizzy as these are the same syptoms his bluetop had?? Have also been told to clean out my throttle position sensor.

Does anybody know where i can find one cheap :?

Im going to get it checked by an auto sparkie tomorrow, so ill get back to everybody about whats happening

Its also been doin this since ive had it, when i got it all it had was an HKS replacement panel filter

Hi

Check out this post.

viewtopic.php?t=15965

My AE111 runs much better since I cleaned the throttle bodies. I used a Valvline product and just followed the instructions.

Hope this helps.

I went and had my fault codes re-checked today (after being cleared on friday) and now the ignition signal has come up, i was told that both the codes are caused by pick-ups in the dizzy

I have a 2nd hand dizzy coming and a local auto sparkie is gonna check it over before i get it fitted to make sure it doesnt have the same problem with the pick-ups, and then will be fitting it for about $30

Total cost is going to be roughly $250 so if it fixes the problem ill be happy :D

Will make a post thursday-ish and tell everybody how it turns out, fingers crossed :P

interesting mine also has a bit of a flatspot at about 3grand when the engine is half warm.

doesn't seem to do it when its cold and the chokes on and doesn't do it once its warmed up but theres a few minutes in between where it stutters and sounds maybe like its dropping a cylinder.

I hate my car sooo much right now, does anybody else have any ideas??
Might try cleaning the throttle position sensor and see what happens as that was also an option

Yeh i cleaned out my throttle bodies today-bit of a mish thou just taking the cover off...
Car seems to be more responsive but not a hell of a lot... and the flat spot has sort of dissapeared...
Overall it has improved the drivability of my car...
