ST 165 Turbo pressure sensor-location???

Postby hoolio » Sun Aug 29, 2004 2:18 pm

Any body know where the turbocharger pressure sensor is located on the ST165? It doesnt appear to be where the manual says it is(drivers side of firewall in the engine bay??? :?

Also what happens if the thing Shi#$ itself??
Thanks

ST165's don't have them well at least JDM pre-facelifts don't
You'll be looking at a US manual there
Anyway what's the symptoms? hesitation? backfiring? Black smoke? Check your ecu error codes and see what that says

Hmm dont have them, thats interesting.
I will check the codes, The engine check light came up while driving, but then went out again, I assumed if it goes out, it has cleared?? - shouldnt assume huh!
Ive just had the turbo rebuilt & went for a drive after putting it all back together.
I had this problem just before I removed it for rebuild,( but because the seals had gone in the turbo & it was smoking, didnt mess around & took it off immediately for rebuild) so am just getting to this problem now.

It happens under boost - not alot however, it goes into its safe mode I believe - similar to what happens when the engine senses detonation, retards timing & cuts fuel back? so you get the bucking thing going on, you ease up & it comes right, go again & it happens again, you get the picture....
The ECU recently had a health check & a few repairs as previous owners had "tinkered". including knock sensor repairs.
The intercooler pump/system appears to be working & runs cool.

I shall check the codes, but till then any input is welcome.......

Yea it sucks how they dont have a TPS(map sensor). I thinks its because the JDM ST165s dont have a factory boost gauge therefore dont have a TPS. So only 10psi can be used with the factory ECU.

Probably a code 34 which is overboost, did you hookup both wastegate hoses properly when putting the turbo back on the car?
I'd get a boost gauge on there and see how much it's running because boost cut should be around 12/13psi but this does vary between models as AFM spring tension changes with age etc

tps = throttle position sensor
and yes they do have a tps

they use the combanation of the afm and the air temp sensor in the plenum to work out airflow

and most will got to 12.5 psi without cut
there mapped to 12.5

they dont have a boost guage but they do have a boost light

I meant turbo pressure sensor. Other people have called it 'TPS' in the past. wasnt to clear though was I.

Have you ever run that much boost constantly vega? I've seen my boost gauge hit 16psi before, just before i almost went thought the windscreen when it hit the the boost cut. I have run 11-13psi but it just hits the boost cut after a few runs to 6000rpm. Maybe its something to do with the temp sensor you mentioned. Youve got me thinking.

yeah ive run 12.5
for like 12 weeks

13 i suffered from random cuts

as 2litre said id differs from car to car and depends on the afm setings

Mine will run over 1.3 bar in 2nd gear but once it gets to 3rd its all over. Mine seems fine up to about 0.9bar most of the time.

so what could be my problem? ive changed the afm with a spare 165 afm and that didnt work. My oil gauge isnt working atm and the water temp gauge is only working sometimes. Could it be related to me only being able to run 10psi?

I doubt it, try another ECU. I have a spare one if you want to test
Did you try resetting the ecu after replacing the AFM with another?

Twolitre: Thanks for the offer, I'll try the one out of my other car and see if that works.
