oil leak quick fix

Postby Voodoo » Mon Aug 30, 2004 9:36 pm

sounds dogey, but is there some sort of sealant that can be used to block leaks temperary, my oil pan seal is leaking abit and i need some sort of quick fix, as by the time i get car back from panel beaters i wont have much time before its entered into a show, and ive been told engine has to be lifted to get at it?

err..excuse my dumbness..but is the oil pan the same as the sump ?
cause if so..you dont need to lift the engine..just unbolt it from underneath and get some goop shiz..cant remember what it's called, but if you go to your toyota or repco..they might be tell you..and then just seal it that way..

but if the oil pan is not what i think it is..then disregard what i said up there..

na sealant over a leak wont really work unless ur very lucky,
engine shouldnt have to cum out to do it, mind u what is it exactly?
id just drop the sump, clean it up and refit with new silicon

im not sure if the stuff from mitre 10 will be best to use, but if its really cheap - might be worth a try, the stuff we use at toyota, as toyota written on it, and comes in a white squezze tube, Mr. Revhead might know the stuff im talking about if you ask him, unless you wanna wait till thursday, when i can check for you and get a price on it ?

sump pans have a gaskit usualy carboard that will need replacing and put a small amount of silicon on each side of the new gaskit

well, as far as i know, non of the toyotas i have worked on, and removed the sump on them have had a cardboard gasket and silicon, and even when replacing the sump gasket, iv never gone to see the parts boys for a sump gasket - always used silicon..it seems to do the trick..

theres special exhaust cement which you can buy also..
depending on where the leak is..usually, youd replace the gasket, and put exhaust cement around it to seal..

ok i had alook at my spare 4agze and yeah , just a silicon is used to seal sump and a cover type thing for bottom of engine/top of sump? that a first i thought might be a seal , so anyway ill grab some silicon for repco , and give it a try if i get my car back in time for panel shop,
but before i drain oil and do this is there anything i need to be careful of, or any advice on doing this, as i dont want to end up with a bigger leak if it dosnt seal well

Cheers

this is what id do..

-drain the oil
-whip the sump off
-scrape up the left over gasket on both sump and block
-clean both surfaces up real nice with a wire wheel on a drill
-Check for any dents in sump, or any reason to cause a leak
-apply generous amounts of silicone on sump surface
-whip the sump back on
-do the bolts up a little tighter if u feel the need!

should be mint after that 8)
