Does A 3Y have A Cambelt Or Chain??

Postby Muzzie » Thu Sep 02, 2004 3:06 pm

Just thought i'd ask, it's not noisy like a chain might be because it's just been rebuilt, dad had an 84 that had a chain, but on the rebuild receipts it says things like 'idler arm' and such things like that - suggesting maybe it has a cambelt.

Hope not - i'd prefer a chain. Anybody know? Mr Revhead maybe?

they have a chain, but chains still have tensioners.

dunno what they mean by idler arm.. sounds more like a suspension part to me....

i was sure they had chains too, but on ure list it says they brought a timing belt kit and idler bearings, which confuses me.

then it says they also brought a tensioner........?

maybe they brought a belt n shitt and found out it was a chain! 8O

plus an 'idler arm' is a little arm on a bearing which is linked to ure RHS tierod, which runs in'sync with the 'pitman' arm on ure steering box to keep the steering linkages balanced........that make sense?

Word for word from the receipt.

Unforunately it's outta warranty now damnit, coz it's goit a VERY noisy lifter now and when I turn it off after a run, it runs on for ages. Up to a minute - but not proper running, as if its like running backwards on 2 cylinders or something. Coughing and spluttering.

Might ring them anyways and see what they say.

I'd say it needs a new lifter at the very least.

Possibly has wrong heat range plugs in it?

Whats a new lifter (if you can get them indiviually) worth? And what plugs should be in it?

It's just had an oil and filter change. I think it's done about 25,000km on the last batch of oil :( Sposed to be done by registered mechanic for mechanical warranty crowd but what they dont know aint gonna hurt them.

how far on the oil????? 8O

i really need the model and frame numbers to be exact, but probably $30-50 for a lifter, also those numbers tell me the plugs it takes, toyota are notorius for changing th eplug type month to month!

Theres the old sticker on the door - sez it was done at 202,000, which was when the motor was rebuilt. I got it at 225, and did it at 227. I'm hoping they just didn't replace the sticker too. Id have thought the owner would keep it serviced after a 5500 dollar rebuild.

Oh well, its got new oil in it now, ill run it through for a few thousand km as a flush and then get decent stuff for it.

Hope it aint damaged the motor in anyway.

dude, u may not know but this is very bad for ure engine.
sounds like the fools that rebuilt ure engine didnt set ure ignition timing, or they forgot to plug in the anti-dieseling solenoid on the carb or sum. Check both of these. could also be wrong plugs as u sed.
