cambelt!

Postby semloshen » Thu Sep 02, 2004 2:15 pm

hi there
I have a 1991 ae92 4age redtop corolla.
Have just bought cambelt, 2xdrive belts, rocker cover gasket & seals.

now ive been told I need a "cambelt timing diagram" in order to change cambelt?

ive tried 'googling' it, searching forums etc but to no avail

would I find this info from a haines manual?

pls let me know!

no you dont, just make sure you dont move ANYTHING whiel doing it
its a good idea to mark the cam pulleys before you take off the belt so you can align them ok.
if your really worried, just turn it over until the timing marks on the pulleys are at the top and inline with the marks on the backing plate

Dude if you havent done one before i'd take it to a mechanic to do. You can mess so much up if you dont know what you're doing.
But if you hell bent on doing it yourself then there are books you can get that tell you how to change them, hanes manual sould also help.

His car is a AE92, so it's a non-interference 16v motor, worst he could do is spit fire out the inlet or exhaust :-)

If only all motors were non-interference, I'd be a happy man...

Get to the belt, turn the engine around until you see marks on the crank and cams that line up (should be reasonably obvious), take cambelt off, put new one on (tightly and without moving the marks away from each other), check marks are still right, reassemble and see if it still drives alright :)

You should be able to pick one up for around $60, most public libraries have them too, so you can photocopy stuff, etc...

Get to the belt, turn the engine around until you see marks on the crank and cams that line up

and if you have any reservations, get a white paint pen and dot the teeth on the belt. put a dot on the new belt and count teeth until you have all the timing marks. not so impotatant on a petrol motor but very handy when doing diesils as cam and injector timing IS critical, and both the cam and injector pump are sprung .

I got a haynes manual for my car for $59.99 + $2.00 P&P from hamilton.

But I know SUpercheap has a great range, as does Repco.

If all else fails try your local library.

a 16valve 4age is a 16v 4age. All the timing marks are the same.
