valve spring removal

Postby GOLDAE86 » Fri Sep 17, 2004 8:01 pm

It is a bit rough but have seen it done before. Grab a 13/16 spark plug socket and a hammer, place the plug socket over the valve collet, hit the socket with the hammer and the valve retainers should pop out,If they dont pop out then get the hammer and tap on the collet just so it helps to break the taper and repeat the process. Make sure you dont have the face of the head flat on a bench.
To finish first, first you must finish

2 g-cramps can work, although time consuming and difficult, and you need the right sized ones, just clamp either side of valve and remove collets

i ended up filling a small bag up with sand, and put it in the combustion chamber, face down. To stop the valve depressing, just the spring. Twas easy from there 8)

I woudlnt reccommend doing it with a bag of sand!! to much risk of putting a non axial loading on the valve. The hammer has trick worked everytime for me....
I assume the head is off??
Prop the head up with a couple of bits of wood so the valves dont/wont hit anything if they start to open. Get a socket/sparkplug socket etc and a decent size hammer and use swift heavy blows on an extension of similar. Has worked eveytime for me with a bit of perserverence.
May want to put a rag over/around the area so bits dont fly everywhere when they let go. Make sure you dont mix up what came from where, and which way up the springs came out...

Just wait till you have the fun of trying to reassemble them... :D

Yeah, hammer and a socket that fits over is the easiest way. Getting them back in is the challenge
