ae101 GTZ engine loses power DIAGNOSED

Ok well I started my car up this morning with no problems, let it idle for 5 to warm up. Drove off nice and easy down the road. About 1km from home it all of a sudden looses power and revs drop slowly while the engine is still running and while im still moving (in 4th gear). Pressing on the accelerator did nothing. I pull over to the side of the road to a standstill and it stalls. Try starting it, will turn over but not start. I was given no warning of this, no problems with it up till now. Cambelts been changed so shouldnt be that.

Any ideas what it could be?

Na had oil/water in it.

Its almost like its all of a sudden lost compression and died.

Could you be running too much oil?
My motorbike would die out of its power cus I ran it too rich and burnt the plugs.
Try changing the plugs,
Maybe your battery wires came lose from the terminals or there wasnt enough charge to keep it running.

Gutted man. Check the ECU codes to see if that brings anything up.

Maybe the fuel filter has colapsed or the pump has spat the dummy? You didn't run out of gas?

Check plugs, leads, intake, all the belts etc..

If nothing else is obvious get a compression check done

Well ive sent it into a garage to get looked at. Na I wasnt outta gas had plenty in there. Pretty sure everything like leads plugs belts intake are good. Just have to wait and see now.

you dont have an alarm that maybe tripping?
I had this sorta problem happend about 3 times... al the dash lights came on engine died stoped on the side of the road played with the alarm remote an it started again... but I also think it may have been the ecu dieing since it hasnt happend since an im runing another one

Na wont be the alarm, not the way it lost power then died. normally if you try start it while the immobiliser is active it beeps at you till you disarm it as well; didnt do that when i tried starting it again

Yeah after JT said it could be something to do with fuel i thought it made a lot of sense, could quite easily be the fuel pump. Just the way it died was like it was sucking the last of the fuel from the lines. When I tried starting it again, it sounded different to what it normally does when cranking over, almost a 'hollow' kinda sound.

I suppose they have an intank pump which is a total bitch to replace?

I guess all ae101 tanks are the same... pritty easy to get at, pull the bottom of ya back seat out, remove the panel in the center with the wires going in... then remove the panel on the fuel tank under the first panel.

The engine could be running in limp mode, check all your fuses.

No worries. It wouldnt surprise me too much if it was cambelt, there are freak cases where they will break after not many kms (8000kms in my case). Im sure if it was the cambelt though the engine wouldve instantly died, which it didnt. The revs slowly dropped then when it got below 1000 it stalled. Even if it has broken, it shouldnt have broken anything in the engine as 4A's pistons are dished and dont bend the valves, well so ive heard.

Dr X, no dont have milk so shouldnt be head gasket. Havent had overheating problems or havent noticed oil in my water.

CAMB01, possibly, dont think its likely though.

Ok just talked to my mechanic, apparently the Crankshaft pulley worked loose, causing the cambelt also to fall off and therefore stop the engine. Lucky there is no internal engine damage to valves etc as he has had it running again so all I need is a new cambelt and a new crankshaft pulley as the original pulley got damaged.

Not such a bad result, couldve been a lot worse!

4a-ge's are infamous for wear on the crank pulley bolts, causing them to come loose. Id say the guy that did your cambelt balls'd it up buy not Locktite-ing the pulley bolt. Its his fault.

No the mechanic im using now wasnt the one who originally did the cambelt. Ive kicked him to the kerb. After he worked on my car, 1. supercharger belt tensioner fell off my car 2. wheel nuts on one wheel werent done up right, lucky the wheel made a noise otherwise that mghtve fallin off too 3. air con compressor bolts were loose including one that flew off my car one morning.

Yeah thats exactly what i was thinking. Id say the crank pulley would stay on for a while if it wasnt done up properly before it did fall off. On my old integra, this bolt appeared on the driveway after the first night i had it, didnt know what it was so left it. year and a half later all the auxillary belts went and i then found out the bolt that fell off originally was holding the crank pulley on!
