What do you need the computer for? I dont think it will tell you much more than checking the ECU will.

In fact I think you'll find that a diagnostic computer won't even work on an AE86. Too old. Manual codes only.

oh ok sorry i dont know much about it i thought id need a diagnostic comp to tell me the error code this is obviously not the case, so whats the correct way to check the ecu then ?

also if the rotor and dizzy cap were fairly crap looking would that be enough to maybe trip the light for the ignition or rpm code ?

cause now car doesnt even start will turn over but when you let go of the key it dies, or if you start it with you foot on the gas it will start and rev but you take you foot of and it dies, i think it might not be lack of fuel i think it could be lack of spark maybe, cause when it was turning over and dying i could smell unburnt petrol, i took the dizzy cap off and scratched up the rotor and bits inside the cap and it fired up like nothing was wrong drove all the way to my olds and didnt miss a beat until just about arriving but it only coughed once and again flashed the light,

You dont need to find the Ecu to get the codes.

There will be a two pin diagnostic plug in the engine bay (yellow plug with black rubber cover over it).

Short the two pins out and turn the key to on.

Check the number of flashes and match up with the link I gave you.

They will read as follows:
13 will be *...***...*...*** etc where * is a flash

If there is more than one code it goes
13 & 17 will be *...***.......*...*******.........*...***.........*...*******

Be sure to reset the ecu by disconnecting the batt for a few minutes before and after.

Oh, and if you get a constand flas like *...*...*...*...*etc it is not reporting any faults.

Cheers

ah ok sweet man cheers,

ok i found where the main loom comes thru the firewall there is a bunch of 4 yellow plugs coming off it, 3 round 1 square, 2 of the round ones are small, one with black rubber cover and one without, the one with the rubber cover on it only has one slot in it and the one slightly bigger has 2 slots, is the one with 2 slots the one to short out by bridging cause the one with the rubber cover on it only has the one slot, however the one with two slots cant fit the rubber cover so it must be the smaller one ???

Do you have a multimeter? Check that you have power at the coil and igniter. Assuming your car has had a transplant, did you use the complete AE86 loom or has it been modified to suit?

I dont have my manual on me but someone may know how to check the resistance through the coil and igniter.
