3S-GE coolant drain plug

Postby Perky » Sun Jan 16, 2005 10:33 pm

Can anyone tell me whereabouts the coolant drain plug is on the engine block? It's a '94 3S-GE in a Curren. The Haynes manual amusingly shows a close-up of the plug to show you where it is.

From memory it's under the intake manifold on the gearbox end but is a real bitch to get at with the engine in the car due to the angle on which the engine sits.

I've flushed my cooland recently... that plug is damn hard to get at and I got absolutely soaked in antifreeze when i got it off :?

The plug is on the firewall side of the engine block on the gearbox side... I found it easiest to put my two longest extensions on a ratchet and come at it from above the exhaust pipe further towards the back of the car

good luck

Thanks for that. Sounds difficult. Does the plug empty the block more effectively than repeated flushings out of the lower radiator tube? That's easy to remove.

I found there was a shitload of coolant sitting in the block obviously lower down than the radiator plug.... guess you could flush without removing the block plug

Yeah, the lower radiator tube emerges from quite high up on the block -- though I don't know how far down the water jacket goes. Repeated flushing does seem to clear everything out but it takes a while waiting for it to cool down and heat up. I flushed then used a cleaner and I'm about half way through.

I think I can see the block plug where you said it would be. But, since I don't have my axle stands or a really long socket extension, or even a good torch with me at the moment, it looks like even more of a PITA than multiple flushing.

Thanks for your help.
