torque

Postby TrouserFxGt » Fri Jan 21, 2005 10:27 pm

I really don't like my blacktop as it has next to no torque where I use it the most.

How can I get more 2.5-4k rpm torque out of this engine?

I'm open to any ideas as long as it doesn't involve turbo or super charging.

Only mod is a decat.

I was thinking of a diesel conversion :?

But anyway are there any tried and true modifications I can do to this engine bearing in mind its in the family wagon?

The hell with diesel, if you want more torque, and are willing to do a conversion. Go for a 3sge, It will be far easier than a diesel, and faster too.

Or you could just sell the car and look for some thing different... but where's the fun in that

If you were going to the trouble of a transplant a 4agze would be much easier as it will bolt up. However he has already mentioned he does not want to go over board so this looks out of the question.

First off you bought the wrong car for low down torque. :(

If your going to install a new exhaust don't go above 2' if your looking for bottom end. A new free flowing muffler will help a little. I would recommend leaving the factory exhaust pipe but modify the 2-1-2 pipe which seems horribly restrictive.

Other than getting custom tuned headers designed for your needs and smaller ports I can't really think of anything else. In the 80's there was a huge trend (which toyota was also a part of ) to make the ports as big as possible. People used to weld up the manifold and decrease the size of the port. This could be an option? (This will increase low torque).

but will lose high end, i dont think he wants to pull out on the motorway to pass someone and find himself with no pull whatso ever.

you picked the wrong engine for low down torque, just look @ its specs... 81x77, she loves to rev man, its what the 4age is designed for...

and also a 3sge is no quicker than a 4age, ive found that out ;). then again a 3sgte... but thats a completely different league.

um, buddy, you dont really have much option, to gain torque and power from these engines, you need to take drastic measures, supercharging gives you low down, but youll lose your high end (why a blacktop has the same q mile time as a supercharged one - stock anyway). take your pick

unless you have a huge engine, you cant have both, unless you have two turbos... which still requires a bigger than 1.6L engine!

in short, ur probbaly going to spend alot of cash trying, but will fail.... if you want a lot of low down torque, go buy something with a 1uzfe.... and shell go forever!

Motor way in Marton

I know the 4age is made to rev but really its not that oversquare that It couldn't put out a bit more torque down low.

Im really after any improvement at all, 5ft/lbs extra would be great. As we all know it isn't a v8 but my old blue top would easily have more torque than this.

your bluetop dosnt rev as high :P.

to seirously improve torque, just try to improve power, torque shall follow

(power = torque x rpm). so try aim for high power on a cheap budget (like we are all doing), and youll bring up torque too >.> right?

intake, exhaust, get them both done, then you can go onto to play *how bigs ya wallet* the more you pay the more power youll make, cams, ecu all avilable at a price.....

how much you got ;)

It's not as simple as big power, the thing he wants is a flat torque curve which starts at 2.5k and peaks at about 5k. I wouldnt recommend a new cam as this will remove the vvt however this is the best option to shift your power range. If you go for less duration this will decrease you maximum torque however you'll make more torque lower down the RPM range and it'll peak earlier.

Otherwise you could sell the car and get a 4afe. More economical and has the torque optimised between 2000-4000RPM.

Oh you silly youngin's. All you seem to care about is peak power these days.

I'm suprised nobody mentioned it, but if you have a reasonable budget, have you thought of changing your dif ratio or gearing?
