Why dont you think about what your saying and apply a bit of your advice to yourself.

In one of my magazines they tested flow and filtration on lots of different air filters and the HKS powwrflow had shocking filtration.

Just get a K&N put it in a cold airbox and duct that to the front of the car.

Put the pod filter as close and exposed to the ground as possible, then drive through a big puddle. This will give the best performance gains. Got hydraulic?

What was the test based on? Remember that most of us will mount such filters in clean, mostly sealed off engine bays, with minimal dust and crap flying around (that's if you look after your car). The test I saw done once basically buried the filter in crap to see how much it let throught. While a mushroom let more throught, realistically none of the filters are going to let that much crap through in a relitively clean environment. NZ's petrol will be doing more dammage to your motor than your air filter.

They put a white carbon filter after the pod filters and tested them in dusty conditions then compared the carbon filters from each pod.

If you drive down dusty roads like me then youll know how the dust gets EVERYWHERE

I suppose that's the difference. If you mostly drive on main roads and not gravel, you can probably get away with a mushroom and no problems. But definately do not put them in your bumper... it looks stupid. All you need is a good bonnet scoop. Or a snorkel

um, the filter dosent "suck air". Your engine (turbo or n/a) will "suck air" through the filter regardless of the position you mount it in..

to a degree, where you mount it is obviously a big factor.

because of high pressure zones and low pressure zones, having a filter in a place where the air has no choice, but to be forced into (eg, behind headlight with cai seutp to run directly into it), obviously it will be forced in.

however, stick it outside your bumper, and the air isnt getting forced in, its getting directed away. yes, it will *suck*, but if you can have the advantage of having air *forced in* at high speed (what is it, same as 0.5-1psi @ 120kph) or something i herad a while ago, but it has that sort of benifit (hey, we all take what we can right?).

you can see the point im trying to make, and getting a filter wet is always a VERY silly idea. only bad things happen then, never ever good.

You can throw as much air at your filter as you want, you wont notice any gain. Of corse a colder air feed is benificiary, due to the denser air particles etc.

you ever heard of Volumetric Effiency? Look it up. Its is the engines abilty to breath on the intake stroke. Aftermarket filters increase VE by free-ing the restriction in factory systems. Colder air also increases VE, because more air is entering the engine in the same space. Throwing air at the filter does not increase the VE because air is always at contant supply in the manifold, intake tube etc. AIR IS ALWAYS AT THE READY!

Smoking a ciggarete in a 50kph head-on wind does not make puffing it any easier.

it seems everyone here whos installed a pod filter is an expert on the subject.

im with dr-x theres sum stupid twats

Postby shaggz » Sat Jan 22, 2005 1:17 pm

why put it outside??? how bling bling is that?,the only bling bling bit is how much bling blbing yuo'll will be spending on new filters all the time, ive always found pod's better than the mushroom type coz they have a greater surface area to suck air through, and also generally last longer if looked after, wack them on sum cool pipe work in yuor engine bay and get sum ducting or a scoop/vent to them for the cold air
drive it till it breaks, then upgrade it

Im not claiming to be an expert but im pretty sure that the engine will be sucking the air in faster than it can be forced in. unless you have a big $&#$% funnel

the other thing is if u have an afm they dont like air being forced in , but that beings aid, like someone said before, the intake is only gonna suck in as much air as it needs cos the tube is always full ur not gonna get anymore in their untill u need it

where'd you hear that? besides their tendency to fall to pieces and get sucked through the intake (only when theyre really old and neglected) I havn't had any problems with them.

Liloss - just get a k&n and keep it oiled... good prices to be had, cant really go wrong with k&n. I'm pretty sure they have bling bling chromey ones these days too.

(speaking of chrome, i saw ice cube on tv saying that 24" chrome spinners are out now, to be cool your 'days' gotta match the colour of your car!...itll be a buyers market for 22-24" chrome rims soon i think :P )

through experiance laddy
i have seen 4 engines absolutly destroeyed buy the poor filtration offered by these filters, and on a lot of cars i have just done simple services on with these filters fitted have alot of dust in the intake tract, throttle bodies etc.

there manly for race applications where the engine will be pulled down after a season etc, without much distance covered and in known enviroments.

Why has everyone missed the most important reason not to put the filter out of the bumper on some queer angle?!?!? 8O

Park in town and stand back and see what will happen, you'll hear:

"EAH! Look bro, there's one of those HKS filters like Hemi has on his Turb's Skyline, we'll rip it off and put it on Wiwi's Commodore aye?"

And in a flash you have the most non-restrictive filter known to man, called the "Nofilter". I can sell you one of these for 10 bucks plus postage. :D

Maybe it's the Whangarei coming out in me, but c'mon get real, air bouncing off the filter element and water on the filter will not be the only problem.
