super strut squeak

Postby minijrocks » Sun Feb 06, 2005 8:09 pm

Hi, ive got an ae101 ss and the front right suspension is starting to squeak. it sounds like its coming from the top of the shock/spring setup
just woundering if anyone else has had this problem.

And also whats the cheapest option of getting rid of superstrut? ie. getting cheap adjustables and ditching the whole ss setup instead of replacing....
thanks

Hey man ive got the exact same problem at the moment. I originally thought it was the lower ball joint (typically) but im sure the noise is coming from the actual shock instead, near the top somewhere.

Theres not cheap option to get rid of super strut. Removing it will mean swaping over sub frames from a non-SS ae101.

Im taking mine in to get looked at some time this week so will let ya know what it is if ya like

Another possiblity is that it is the bushes for the sway-bar / Anti-roll bar squeaking as the sway bar moves - this is most likely to happen when that suspension is "cold" (i.e. moving off first thing in the morning) and you drive over a "traffic calming device" AKA speed bump causing a reasonable amount of suspension travel. I have two squeaks every morning, getting out of my drive, and driving over the speed bump 5m up the road.

I've got the same as the first two guys. My one used to squeak a little and now it does it all the time. I figured it was the SS as well, but I'm pretty sure it's closer to nthe top of the shock. Might have to replace the shockies me thinks. Let me know your findings when you've had it checked out...

Cheers

Yeah the thing is that I have only just had new inserts put into my front struts within the last 3 months so it shouldnt be that, although wouldnt be surprised if it was. Will find out sometime this week though

Lol yeah my car ae101 GTZ has the same noise from the top of the shock area too , and I only recently replaced the lower suspension arms on the SS , the garage seemed to think it was the shocks , but I havent ever got round to taking it to get checked out.

Ok got my diagnosed today was the lower Super Strut arm/ball joint.

For all those who have just recently done the arm and still making noises then id suggest taking banga69's avice and checking the sway bar bushes

Haha funny. My AE101 FX GT with S/S has just started doing this. Its more annoying than anything. Guess i'll take it in this week to get fixed. Ball park figure what it costs to get repaired/replaced? The part that is.

oh u poor bastards with AE101s with SS...i pitty the fool....

there is a NZPC mag with an article on SS supension in it (ill have to have a hunt around for the mag and do a scan of the article), SS is notorious for going thru ball joints and bushes, if ur getting ball joints done, get the bushes checked at the same time and change to nothalene items, bit more expensive but alot more relaible than what toyota put in there out of the factory....had to do this to my AE92 levin, but luckily the 92's are free of the SS...

Just rang the suspension place and theyve told me it could be the arm and that i needs to be reconstructed - soudns expensive. Hopefully its only a bush or ball joint. He says the ball joints are hard to come by thou... guts... Anyone else fix their problem?

Hey man dont waste your time getting the lower arm/ball joint 'reconditioned', they only last 5-10thou kms in my experiences. Mr Revhead does brand new genuine lower arms for $170.

And yes I got my arm replaced last week and noises have gone.

As for sway bar bushes, Id perhaps look at getting them done at the same time, should only take an hours labour and if you have a hook up for nolathanes theyll only cos ya $10 for a pair.
