The ae86 one has disk brakes, I don't think the ae85 ones ever had disk brakes.

I don't know if the 86 ever had drums though :?

the "ae86" diff that ive got has drum brakes. i was told it was the diffs that came out standard with LSD's that had disc brakes, whereas the non-lsd diffs had drum brakes.

not all AE86 rear ends are lsd's thou, they were factory optioned not factory standard, AE85 rear ends were all drum brakes and from memory are a 6.5" diff. AE86s have disc rear ends and i think are 6.75" some lsd some not, however i think a few did come out lsd and still had drums, well so im told i cant say ive seen one thou so i dunno how common they are

Most AE86's had disc rears but they made an AE86 GT version that had a drum rear end. Easiest way to tell is if we can see a photo of the casing where the drive shaft meets the diff, the top of the casings are different.

i was told it was the diffs that came out standard with LSD's that had disc brakes, whereas the non-lsd diffs had drum brakes.

As ae85.6 says, this is not the case. Disc rear ends also came with an open diff and are more than likely what you'll find in one. Alot of the factory lsd's were taken from the ones that came into nz and used for rallying.

To the best of my knowledge the only AE86 diffs that had drums were Ozzie assembled cars that had a single cam 4a engine! (Although I have seen Toyota do some odd things!)
If it is a true AE86/4AGE diff it will have discs. Although the diff head can be the same size and have drums so the discs will not affect strength.

i found with a ae85 open diff rear end the pinon flange bit was about 20-25mm shorter than a facelift non lsd ae86 diff. made the stretch easy peasy though.

As already mentioned earlier in the post, In Japan AE86 Coupe's were available in a 'GT' model, they had AE85 Seats & a Drum brake rear end on them

I have been thinking about this and unless I saw one I would not believe that any AE86 that had a factory fitted 4AGE came with drums.
I can read that earlier post Rob_GTZ but that is just that 'a post' it does not mean it is correct! Alot of things are mentioned in posts but are just crap!

And |1ttle_d3vil those pictures are an AE85 diff if my eyes serve me well. I can only see 8 bolts on the diff head and AE86 diff's have 10 bolts! Whoever sold you that diff my have ripped you off! 8O

There are diffs out of other vehicles that have the 10 bolt diffhead but not the disc brakes so if someone has one then it is probably one of these. If you put it next to an AE86 diff you will see that the shock mounts are different too.

Well you can believe whatever you want too, that's your choice. There's plenty of pictures & info about this floating around on the Net, In fact in Japan the GT coupes are more popular with the drifters as the drum brakes lock up alot easier than the discs

Or else you could try asking Reo from Garage Dori/Tama Autos, As he has actually owned at least a couple of GT Coupes

85/86 diffs

Postby crispy'86 » Tue Feb 15, 2005 10:14 pm

And an important thing that hasn't been pointed out is that the ae85's had drum brakes as you all know but MORE IMPORTANTLY: AE85 DIFFS ARE 8 BOLT AE86 DIFFS ARE 10 BOLT. This is on the diff flanges where the head bolts to the housing. I'm surprised none of you pointed this out cause it's one of the more distinguishing features between the both of them

ok well im not really tooworried about whether ae86s have drum brakes standard or what, i just wana know if this is an ae85 or 86 diff. im guessing its off an ae85.

strange thing is though that the AE86 LSD diff head i got off Yems has 8 bolt holes to bolt it to the diff housing!
