Engine from auto car into manual car

Postby jeremiahnz » Tue Feb 22, 2005 11:44 am

I am looking at getting an engine orginally from an automatic car and sticking it into my car which is a manual.

What I want to know is whether there would be any issues with this? The only things I can think of are:

1) that the ECU from the auto engine may expect to be communicating with sensors/computer from the automatic box.

2) There may be some left over wires on the loom that I don't need to use.

Can anybody confirm, deny or add to any of the above?

Thanks

straight forward, to start it you'll need to bridge the inhibitor switch on the g/box, and you'll have a left over linkage from where the kickdown cable was

Really do need to be more spacific with the engine type, as sometimes they can vary...however as thaphatty sez, generally you can just bridge the inhibitor switch loom and away you go.
When I converted my supra to manual from automatic I did that and then completly removed the auto's ecu, so there are a few plugs left over that you wont need to use

in a automatic car the inhibitior switch stops the car from being started in drive/reverse etc.

its in an auto car so you cannot start the car in any gear, only park and depending on car neutral.
obviously going manual you wont have a park...or switch, so you bypass it

Ok, so you simply hardwire across the switch to bridge it?

yep. I found the plug in mine that went to the inhibitor, made a loop inside and plugged back in the loom...just a tidy way of bridgeing it

Ok, cool makes sense.

So that is pretty much it? The inhibiter and the throttle linakage?

Just to clarify, it was said
to start it you'll need to bridge the inhibitor switch on the g/box

If I am using my manual gearbox it won't have this switch will it? So do I bridge it back to the ecu cutting off the switch that would have been on the auto box?

Cheers

To answer your question as Ae92typeX wrote:obviously going manual you wont have a park...or switch

heres what you do:

find 2 wires to inhibitor switch , strip, soilder, then crimp. or whatever fasion you use to join them. :|

easy peasy

my mate did the auto-manual swap and forgot about the nuetral start switch, wondering why it didnt wanna start.

we ended up wiring it up to the A/C button, for a little extra security.

in the back of the plug going into the selecter quadrant, on the front of the gear box (front of car) there is i think 6-8 wires going in to it.

find the black wire, and black with white stripe
they will be next to each other in the middle.
those are the 2 you want to bridge.
also the reverse light switch plug will be different.

i thought he said he was getting a engine out of an auto and putting it in his manual car. Toyota use seperate computers for there automactic gear boxs dont they. which would mean wat you guys just told him would of confused him even more considering his car is manual and all he is doing is swapping a engine into it.

nice 'correct' reading!
Think I got myself confused when I read the questions.
engine from an auto and into a manual, assuming all engine plugs are the same is just a bolt in jobbie, none of this talk about inhibitors lol
took a while for anyone to click!
