Guide to 4age Pod Filters - Help and Pics needed!!

Postby LEVIN GTV » Mon Feb 21, 2005 7:38 pm

Hey guys,

Im just trying to put to rest the CORRECT way to install a pod filter to a 4age engine. Currently my engine is stock, but i am getting custom 4-2-1 extractors and 2" mandrel exhaust in the coming weeks.

I am looking for the best way to install a pod filter to my engine bay.
Does anyone have any pictures of how you have set urs up? I know my engine bay is very tight, and it is difficult to make space for the pod.

Questions:
Is it best to leave the air box and put a pod/better filter in there?

Or can you get a larger air box and then put a pod in that?

What piping is best to run from the tvis to the pod? Stainless, pvc etc?

Is it worth taking off the current stock cold air intake, and replace it with different piping, running that under the car?

Heat shielding? Is it worth it? How and where should it be placed?

Pics, of how people have done theres would be great, and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

My Trueno has a HKS Super Flow DD Filter and just sits on the end of the intake pipe WITHOUT the AIRBOX but with the standard air pipe..... It needs some heat-sheilding around it. It also has a pipe from the front spoiler up to the filter as well... With the extractors/full 2.5" exhaust it goes REALLY well...

Move the battery to the boot and build a cold air box where the battery was and use that.

Too much effort in that, plus being a fwd i need all the weight i can get in the front!

You do not need to move the battery to the boot to box the pod. Build up a stainless box which is a little larger than the pod and cut three holes for flexy pipe and vent to cold locations (under car, front headlight and gaurd).

Most people will say this is the wrong way:

And this is the right way (well kind of):

But with the new setup, 2.5" piping from t/b down past battery through hole under battery tray and pod mounted under car in the inner guard, I have noticed absolutely no difference from the butt dyno.

Really?! no difference whatsoever?

not even on a hot day? under load? high/low rpm? at speed?

what about idling at the lights, on a hot day, with a hot motor? surely..

any other mods?

that statement was sorta controversial, iMO

My 5c Worth:

I just brought a K & N panel filter, does a great job. No need to modify anything.

And since doctor X knows all. I'll keep my opinions to myself.

That's an...interesting theory.

Nope, no change under any conditions, and no change in fuel economy either.

The only difference it made is less intuction noise.

Although my engine hasnt performed like it should for quite some time now, I havent figured out why but when I do I might noticed a difference.

Thats sort of rite cold air compresses better than hot thats exactly what an intercooler does for example cools air down so it compresses better

i think the word your after is denser  hot atoms shake/move alot, cooler atoms move less and are closer together or denser if you will.

thats why you should have your turbocahrger, sucking THROUGH another intercooler then a poddie :D

mm cold suction....

(assuming you mean air to air) its not possible for intercoolers to cool down lower than outside air temp so it makes most sense to me to just to have a good cold air intake

The guy who said that less O2 needs more fuel is a lost cause. I feel sorry for his car. You want to put in more O2 so you can put in more fuel and then make more power.

In an FI setup the turbocharger or supercharger will heat up the air. As you compress air it gets hot, and the turbo compressor is right next to a big hot exhaust pipe which doesnt help. The intercooler is used to cool this air back down to ambient temperature. You can put cold air in at the pod filter, but after it goes through the turbo it is hot again, so you have an intercooler.

On an NA setup you want to get the coldest air possible to your engine because this is one of the only things you can do to get more O2 in there. A pod filter is there to flow more air than a factory filter and prevent any restriction in the intake. The cold air box and positioning of the filter are how you keep the intake air as cold as possible. I dont actually have a toyota so you'll have to sort that one out ya self

*shakes head*

An intercooler is only needed on a turbo because when the turbo compresses the air it heats up. Same reason why air compressors get so bloody hot.

A cold air intake will make the most difference on a cold day/morning.

With a water sprayer on the intercooler, theoretically, you might be able to cool the air inside the intercooler lower than ambient. Don't know if it could work in practice though. I was once tempted to try an intercooler with sprayer on my N/A car to see if it would work. can't be bothered though.
Anyone tried it?
