After Market Air Filters

Postby BZG Wagon » Mon Mar 14, 2005 3:16 am

Wanting to get a POD for the rolla (20V Black Top AE101).

Just wondering what the difference is between a
* $40 Filter from a tiny jap shop in town
* $100 K&N / Jamex / Whatever

Is there a specific size or surface area I need?
Is it a matter of getting an adapter and connecting it or do I need to do more?

I will be keeping the standard exhaust for now and I dont really have any major plans for the car. I just want it to breath a bit better and give it a bit more pull (mainly at lower rev's where it is lacking).

If you spend the money on a k&n, it'll last you ages, simply cause it's re-usable.

The $40 one will probably not be washable.

Yo can normally put the pod straight onto the intake pipe, with the right size hoseclip.

Have you looked at a plate filter replacement instead of a Pod?

I've heard that cheap pod filters (i.e. Wildcat and so forth), actually flow less than a standard air filter in most cases, they are purely for wank value...be interesting to find out.

my K&N flat panel works so much better than my pod did. If your using a pod you need to be able to get air to it, like stick it in a Cold air box and route air to it, or stick the pod down near the bumper. Other wise its better just taking your existing flat panel into repco or what eva, and get them to match you with a K&N or wateva, i def recommend mine, but was fukin expensive for a filter.

Its been tested, the restriction in your intake system, if you have one, is NOT your air filter, the resistance is VERY minimal.

its your airbox seutp.

most people cheat, and scrap the box putting a poddie on. Sucking lots and lots of hot air in X_X.

just get a panel filter, mod your airbox, then run a cold air feed into the box.

Whamo, best your gonna get >.> and make sure you remove all restrictions!

That test is probably a bit too old to treat as a guide for the filters currently available..

FWIW, my carib has a APEXi replacement element in the standard airbox, I have removed the anti-resonance box from inside the guard and IMHO you will not get any additional benefit (in fact most likely a power reduction) running a pod due to heat soak... and yes this set-up made a huge difference over the standard arrangement!

I believe in the K.I.S.S. rule (Keep it simple stupid!) best bang for buck!

Exactly, Ive gt the Blitz 'SUS' Power filter as show at the top of the page on my 20v. Its a pity bout the filtering results but I gt it for free so Im not worried too much. Its in a custom cold airbox and work really good in any conditions, even on hot days.

In my Familia I had a Jamex Plate Filter and the previous owner cut a big hole in the bottom of the air filter box.

- You guys reckon a similar set-up would work?
- So I basically just replace the standard Air Filter with a K&N/Apexi and keep the Air Filter Box?
- Any ideas on prices?

For your blacktop a K&N panel is prob around $140 retail, a bit less if you have a hook up.

If I were you id look out for one on trademe, thats what I did, got a mint one for $25. People seem to think a panel is worthless and sell em for not much more than that
