Altezza Potential?

Postby Luke - BZG » Tue Mar 22, 2005 6:19 pm

Thinking about what to get for my next car. An altezza would be nice, but im wondering what could be done in the engine department. If the 3 litre 6 cylinder 2JZ-GE from the wagon has more moding potential than the 2 litre 4 cylinder 3S-GE can they be swapped around? any other info would be good.

Cheers

the 2 litre 4cyl beams engine has huge poteltial, i mean N A alone it has good kw ratings, you can always get a hks or reddy turbo kit made for altezzas....not expensive, low psi and get yourself 210 kw easy
in fact specr has the UNFAIR altezza, saw it today, it has alot of power, rear wheel drive too...and they look good.....so maybe you should see hima nd ask him what he has done and do the same

or if u wanna stick to na, im sure there are plenty to do, trd catalogue has lots of them from computer chips to exhaust...
Have you got the hots? for what's in the box with the dots? ..... 0800 30 40 50

V8 or Supra TT conversion will do quite nicely thank you!!!

Rod Millan did a one-off for SEMA show last year or the year before, chucked a V8 and 6spd box in it, labelled it the IS430, google it and see what you find, saw it on Sky drifting quite nicely around a track with a oh so glorious growl!!

There is a nice yellow v8 conversion done as a race car. Mind you it cost them close to six figures. The job is supreme though.

It's saying on here that it should almost put that much power out as stock? But maybe thats the same case as the Levin supposedly putting out 165hp stock.

It was built for the Bathurst Endurance race. Targa was a run in.

The factory rated figure of 154kw is at the fly and probably is a usual toyota figure. The turbo tezza in that link is 160kw at the wheels and has a whole lot more torque!

Sorry but that's utter BS, these kits may be relatively inexpensive (depending on your definition) but they are bodge. It costs a lot of money to effectively and reliably turbocharge the Altezza 3SGE. Turbotezza has spent a fortune making his reliable after it blew up using one of these kits, and he's still making less power than the Toyota NZ Altezza touring cars were making NA.

IMO you'd need to spend $15-20k to turbocharge the Altezza 3SGE and achieve a reliable power output worthy the investment. For that sort of coin you could do a 2JZGTE transplant. Or if you just want good power and torque, the 2JZGE Altezzas/IS300s are outstanding cars bone stock, even with the auto box.

This is coz my car is in very mild tune. If i wanted to run more boost i could, with more advance, it would be over 200 rwkw, thing is i don't need any more power. Its fine just the way it is.

And yes the engine has alot of potential.

You would be struggling to do a 2JZGTE coversion for near $10K. Engine to start with are about $4k.

UZ would be the way to go..... :)

Maybe, but until you do it's speculation, and I'd suggest not without spending even more money on a bigger turbo at least.

I accept that, my point was the amount of money expended relative to the reliable power improvement gained.

And yes the engine has alot of potential.

Yes but that's true of any engine if you spend enough money. IMO the cost benefit of turbocharging the Altezza engine is poor unless you are aiming for a significant HP gain from the outset. Even then an engine transplant is probably going to be cheaper and at least as effective.

You would be struggling to do a 2JZGTE coversion for near $10K. Engine to start with are about $4k.

But you would be strugging even harder to get equivalent reliable power from a turbo Altezza 3SGE. How much have you spent? :)

UZ would be the way to go..... :)

Possibly, but it would involve a lot more custom fabrication work than a 2JZGTE and has less power potential without significant modification.

With trying to piss anybody off, it is impossible to beat OEM engineering for value for money and reliability. It might look like it at the beginning, but over time you just cant do it. These OEM's spend hundreds of millions on R&D, and you just cant replicate that in your back shed or small tuning house. I would personally either do a mild tune or if reengine with a proven engineered end to end solution.

Word!!!

Why do people assume that it is possible to out engineer a team of highly educated, skilled and experienced engineers?....

HP costs a lot of money, reliability costs even more

The thing is that the engines are built with a certain purpose in mind:
Daily driving.
For this, they shouldn't be too loud. Not everyone wants a loud induction sound as well as a huge blaring exhaust note. There are some that do, but they represent a small minority compared to the rest of the consumer market.
All round power is another one. When you start tuning a car, you tend to sacrifice power or response in part of the rev range for a gain in another.
For example, big cams in an N/A will give you more power up high, but rob you of it down low. If you're driving a car around town, you don't want that.

There are other reasons too, but thats why each of the companies has their own motorsports group. TRD, Nismo, Ralliart etc etc. So that when people want to use these cars in motorsport, they can get the parts they need to make it a very competative car that won't need to meet a daily drivers requirements.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

If you get a chance check out the best motoring series of dvd's. One has the trd altezza on it. It has things like quad throttle bodies on it that they claim gave it an extra 20hp instantly. All up the thing is making 280ps out of a 2L NA. Revs out to 9K too! Just like a VTEC, only better :!:
