clutch not disengaging?

Postby scope » Mon Mar 28, 2005 8:04 pm

hey

after giving my ke30 a bit of a thrashing my clutch decided it doesn't want to work. it seems that it won't go into gear like the clutch isn't disengaging. the cable ain't broken, i've checked that. if i start the car in gear, it doesn't stall which makes me think that it's not disengaging.

any one know how to fix this?

thanks

I had this happen to a fwd starlet once, the hole clutch assembly had sezied up and didnt disengage, i think we had to pull the gearbox off to clean it all up

I dont quite understand what you're saying here. Are you able to get into gear with the car off?

So, if you're sitting at idle, you cant get into gear at all? This obviously sounds like a clutch problem. But the fact that it wont even go into gear while the car is off is very odd.

yeah that's why i think the clutch is stuck being engaged. if i'm on very flat ground, and put into first and try move, it will move at like 1cm/second

Hang on, how do you put it into first? Are you sure you've described these smyptoms correctly, because it sounds very odd. Either way, the gbox needs to come off, so you may aswell whip it off and see what's wrong.

clutch in, put into first, try take off normal, give it alot of revs, moves very very slowly. could it be just major major clutch slippage but instead of slipping, it's stuck? :D

You said before that you couldnt get into gear, and now you're saying you can get into gear. Please clearly describe your symptoms. From what you just said, your clutch is rooted and slipping really badly. It's certainly NOT stuck on.

ahh yes. bit of a mistake i wrote. by 'not into gear' i meant it won't move properly :p slap slap

should i just get under the car and have a look? never run into this sort of problem so not really sure how to fix (or describe it properly!)

well u cant drive it like it is ;) so i would sugest pulling the gearbox off and inspecting the clutch setup. takes about 15-30 mins to pull of the gearbox off. u will probly find the thrust bearing has siezed on the shaft or sumthing. does the clutch feel normal wen u depress the pedal?

Sounds like you've murdered your clutch plate. Sometimes with cheaper clutches, if you keep dumping the clutch/sidestepping etc, the clutch plate can often break apart, so the centre sprung part snaps off the actual friction surface. It means that when you put the clutch in, you may get horrible scraping noises, and it won't go into gear.
