2TG or 4AGE?

Postby RS13 » Tue Mar 29, 2005 8:30 pm

Righteo..

Car is KE70. Am looking at a decent repower, while maintaining reliability and driveability.. ie, no shitting diffs every time I feel like a skid!

I've searched, been sifting throughout TS resources.. to no avail. As has been mentioned before, I'm not after backyard I-heard-this mechanics, I need people who've done the conversion.. but any opinions would be helpful. Obviously, I'd love to go with the later motor, but parts are getting damn expensive. Ultimately, I'd LOVE a 20V rwd. Sooo...

I'd like to know about either conversion. 2T conversion, I've been told you can use the 2TG/TE71 crossmembers, but you have to change to TE71 steering, which is a pain in the ass, which I'd rather not do. Is there any chance that I would be able to keep the KE70 steering, and NOT have to weld up new mounts? The rest should be a bolt-in affair, wiring, fuel pump, gearbox mounts etc. Add to this the fact that 2TGEU's are getting damn cheap, for the whole package; ideally, this would be the most cost-effective way. I would also consider a twincarb 2T-B.

4AGE. I'd try and get hold of an AE70 (3-AU). Would I be able to use the crossmember from that, without having to modify anything? Not too sure what steering system it uses, would it be same as KE70? I'd be looking at getting a silvertop 20V, they seem to be cheaper than a RWD bluetop at the moment, and maybe a T-50 if I can find one.. failing that, I'd try find a bluetop, K50 or something. Whats' involved in this conversion? Wiring much harder to install over the 2TG loom? Compatibility with the TE71 dash wiring (tachometer etc?)

Rear end.. I'm not really too fussed on an LSD, but would prefer rear discs. I need to know what my bolt-in options are, Celica/Corona/Corolla anything? I don't want to shell out for a hilux LSD, I won't ever have that much power to justify buying one, as I said, I'm just after a nice streeter.

Or, failing that, I could just drop in a 12A, and be done with it.

Any help = MUCH appreciated, cheers! :D

i would put an ae86/disk brake ae85 diff in. quite easy to put in. um, i dont think u will b able to do the 2T without doing a little bit of work toget it in there :P um, 2t-b with big side draughts.. dont have to worry much about wiring that way and will have some go etc.

Well, 2TGEU can't be too hard, especially if I get a whole car as parts.. its just the steering that might feck me. Crossmembers bolt up within the *E7* range, AFAIK.

2tgeu is a piece of piss to put in, get a crossmember from a te71 and it will fit straight in, also its not really that tricky to weld the steering mounts for the ke70 rack, and its also not to hard to change the steering over if you are lucky enough to find te71 steering, the big bonus with the 2tg is that there are t50 boxes everywhere to fit them and they are dirt cheap too, also there are w55 boxes that will bolt right up as well if you end up getting a bit more power

Diff wise you can pick up a 10bolt corona diff for $&#$% all, and it will bolt straight in, or if your lucky enough to find an AE86 or TE71 diff they bolt straight in as well, and are fairly strong, also if your keen on good front brakes get front struts and steering arms out of ta6* celicas, or carinas, they also bolt straight in and are 10" vented discs :D

I have a mate with a 2tgeu in his ke30, he has a race cam, link computer, 3t pistons, ported, uped compression etc. etc. and it used to blow t50's on a regular basis, until going to a w55 for it, the 2tgeu is a decent wee engine and will be a heap cheaper and easier to do than a 4age

i have a set of mounts to suit T-series onto KE70 x-member. the T-series are a piece of cake to fit and i have most of the bits you'll need to do this .PM for more info.

biggest killer of the 4age is the t50 bellhousing....

all the 2t bits are piss easy to score.

if that doesnt help you decide... go with ya heart!

as a owner of TE71 with 2TGEU and AE86 with 4AGE, well, Also the diff ratio on both car are also different... TE71 (4.1:1), AE86(4.3:1), I noticed a huge gain from AE86.. They are much faster and cheaper to run too!
TE71 use recircular ball joint while AE86 use Rack and pinion. Rack and pinion feel nicer to drive with while the TE71's give more angle on full lock, even with loger knuckle arm than AE86. tried fitted the short knuckle arm on TE71 and wheel hit the chassic on full lock... even with negative offset wheel (about -10).

yeah, 2TGEU bellhousing are much easy to find. while the A-T will be alot harder and more expensive.

So, if I'm you, i'll go for 4AGE since they produce more power. But for reliability, I'll go for 2TGEU as I never ever have any problem with the motor itseft, except alternator. I haven't have very good luck with 4AGE, as they more easy to blow head gasket (maybe due to thinner cylinder gab between piston) compare to 2TGEU even i ran the car way over heat because of stuff radiator when i 1st brought the car and still goes mint until today... after i change the radiator to Nissan S15 item.. never ever overheat! if this happend to 4AGE, it will be dead by now. I also runs bigend bearing on 4AGE :?
I just can't believe how small 4AGE us when you compare them with 2TGEU.. as it look like a 2.0 liter motor!

Yeah, I've decided to go with the 2TG, unless my mate can sort me a 12A crossmember. Seems to be the most cost-effective, hopefully.. the only hurdle I can predict is mating the TE71 engine crossmember with the KE70 rack'n'pinion. I'm going to spend as much as I can get for my Skyline, hopefully around $2000.. SHOULD be do-able.

YEs recirc ball sucks shit, however xE7x did come with r&p.

A friend of mine has an ae70 rust as hell mostly stripped but motor and box 5spd box is there, perfect for a conversion and probly only a couply hundy bucks worth for the whole car...

ic... cos i wonder if u have all the stuff there... as i still got my TE71 and very reluctane to sell it as i want to keep it as part for my AE86 as all the TE71 stuff is mint and motor done only 170,000km (140,000km when brought it) no smoke or anything.
