Weird brake noise

Postby Lunchie » Thu Apr 21, 2005 10:35 pm

Hey guys on my way home tonight my left front brake started making a weird sort of scrapping noise when i brake ....
it doesnt sound like the normal sqeak that you hear all the time from some cars but more like a metal on metal sound.....
basically it sounds F**king bad....my car has also been making the weird sqeaking noise for a while from time to time recently as well so i thought maybe the brake pad has finally just got completly stuffed...

Any ideas as to what it is and how i should go about getting it fixed.... oh and btw it is a disc brake not drum....

What ever you do, get it fixed fast. It will cost a whole lot more for a set of disc's if you drive it around :?

hmm, mine does the same thing on the same place. Had pads replaced but it still makes that horrible "hollow" sort of sound on breaking, especially when the car is just coming to a complete rest. If not pads what else could it be??? oh i also had the discs machined but no help.

sometimes they do squeal a bit, even when all new pads have been put in, afaik its the brake dust that causes it. Believe me its not as loud as when you hav no pads

if you have no pad left, its like a graunching sound, metal on metal. Ive never driven a car like this so have no idea how bad the brakes are or how they feel.

They generally dont feel to bad because you usually dont wear down all 4 front pads at exactly the same time. Most cars with a completely worn pad usually have a little meat left on the other 3 pads so you have at least one wheel stopping properly. Most people tend to get things fixed as the noise is horrible.

Go to repco, get new set of front pads to match your car. I think they also have a guide to replacing brake pads, it's pretty easy, and would be something you oughta learn eventually.

Good luck.

I know this may sound a bit obvious - Have you checked for stones? (Thats if you have meat on your front pads).

ah ye, once when i was stupidly poor, had to drive around with no pad, after a while the backing plate of the pad got so worn down the pad actually slid out of the caliper - no brakes. got a nice handbrakie going after that though
