Clunking from rear suspension in ae111

Postby RAZA » Fri May 07, 2004 10:41 am

Hi all,
anyone know whether there is a common part in the rear suspension of an ae111 levin that would cause a clunking noise going over bumps?

It sounds like a bush has gone somewhere but there are a lot of parts and it only makes the noise when going over bumps, i cant seem to find any parts with play in them while its stopped.

best i can tell its not superstrut (has smaller brake calipers)
any thoughts appreciated

any idea how much of a job to change?

is there anything in the way of the sway bar or can you take it off to change the bushes while leaving the rest of it pretty well intact?

You just need to unbolt the bracket that holds the sway bar and bush in place, and support the sway bar itself with a jack so it doesnt drop.

It won't be the bush, most likely the sway bar link, about 4 or 5inches long, bolts to rear shocks and to rear swaybar...

To replace you just need to take your wheel off to access, real easy, best you have access to a rattle gun though as after a few years of being on there happily they can be a bit of a biarch to take off...

I'm pretty sure mine had this issue and it was the bushes on the swaybar also, didn't fix it myself, but after being shown what was done didn't look too hard to do :)

when takign the links off, soak them in wd40. they have allen key inerts in the ends as often the will spin inside, and you wont be able to shift the nut.

Forget the allen keys!! I rooted about three trying, the only way I could get mine off were a dirty big rattle gun, The new ones i got off you had some sort of loc-tite already on them so no doubt it forms a pretty good bond once tightened  hence the issues i had getting the old ones off!!

Trust me i can show you 3 allen keys that got leverage  they twisted, i had vice grips on the allen key also, mind you i also used a big screw driver to lever between link and sway/shock when rattling them off so it didn't spin

i think my problem is the sway bar link, it is suppose to be tight??? cos i check the screw is tight but the link seems to be able to move... how much is the bush on the link???

Link Link Link Link Link Blink

If the problem is definately the sway bar links then take them off as above, with a 'correct' sized allen key and a spanner. Take the old one down to your local suspension shop and get new ones for both sides, as there is no point doing just one side. If you cant find a shop thats has them then ring SAS on 092623684, they are in Manukau and they definately stock them. ( I used to work there ). Bout $15.00 each.

If that does fix the noise then it will be another bush. Either the rear trailing arm bushes or the 'pillow ball' bushes in the ends of the rear control arms. These can also cause the sounds you have been hearing and are more commonly picked up when you go for a wof because your rear wheels have too much lateral movement.

My best advice, go see SAS and get them to check your car. Tell them the problem and let them sort it out. It wont cost you anything for them to check it out. Then you get get them to do it or you can buy the offening parts and do it yourself.

Cheers

Greg

 Is that a dig at me? Cos i can assure you i used the right size, i didn't burr the end of the allen key nor the hex slot on the link, no I managed to twist the whole god damn allen key.... my car had had some TRD suspension put in it (most likely when it was new) and i would say they over torqued everything as every bolt on those struts was tight as a mofo and when even I have to use an extension tube on a power bar then she's definitely tight!!!

Check all the control/trailing arm bolts are tight. Had one of mine slightly loose and it sounded bad on bumps. Replced the sway bar bushes and the noise wasn't gone, turned out just to be one slightly loose bolt.

yea i wasnt far off twisting an snapping the key... used a rattle gun seamed to get the dirt an shit off, then some crc then alot of twisting with the spanner and key, once its loose was easy to wind out... till the end of the therd where is once again jammed tight, I thought id brake the alan key, but I didnt have many ideas or tools sitting near by to try.

Mine was making the same noise from the rear, turned out to be the sway bar bushes, replaced and presto - no noise
