Designing 2 1/2"exhaust for 4age

Postby ChaosAD » Mon May 02, 2005 9:44 pm

Due to the large cams im putting in my 4age I will be needing to upgrade my exhaust.
Im going to use 2 1/2"pipe and mandrel bends, but need advice on what type of muffler/resonators to go for that wont be too loud or restrictive.

Does anyone have any ideas?

2 x 19" long coby resonators, and a rear N1 style muffler from actiondan.

I can take my whole system off me car and it doesnt make a difference, weird that. So must be pretty free flowing.

what cams u using?

240 deg @ .050" in 8.8mm lift
323 deg @ .050" ex 8.8mm lift

Are those long resonators the ones with the big restrictive looking expansion chambers? Those ones let the gasses expand then try and compress them back into a small pipe :?

Is your system very loud? I suppose your turbo would quieten it down a bit.

you can get ones with or without the expansion chambers.
Yes my system is pretty loud even with the turbo.
When it was s/c it was damn loud!

Try some lukey mufflers, my apprentice boy has some on his bzg and he also has a 2 1/2 inch mandrel bent due to wanting to turbo it at some stage - sounds quite nice, quite deep and not to loud.
Thats my suggestion anyhow - i'd avoid n1 style mufflers like the plauge for a na car, to hard to get a nice sound and keep quite.

Have found in my experince that 2 decent lukey mufflers using one as a reso flow extremely well whilst sounding nice without being to loud, maybe quiet wasn't quite the right word but it got my point across. Also you need at least 2 long reso's to keep the noise down as well as a decent rear muffler - all these add up to more than a decent muffler and a decent muffler used as a reso, and are more restrictive to boot!

Is it just me or does 2 1/2" sound a bit too big for a 1600cc N/A engine?

I know people that won't go bigger than that on a 2 litre turbo engine...

Group N Lancer EVO III rally cars ran around 260HP (or something like that) and ran a 2inch exhaust.....

All JDM bolt on systems for 4AGE's are 2.5in....

I have just replaced my 2.5in system with a 2.25in system running into two 19in coby's (with expansion chambers however these offer no restrictions  ) then it splits into twin 2 inch and out through two 2inch Holden Commodore VX V8 factory resonators (baffled not straight through, although are off a 250kw motor so offer virtually no restriction on a measly blacktop output ) end result is better than my 2.5in system and factory quiet 8) plus being the one of the only twin rear mufflered AE111's around!

Yup, tuned length extractors with 2 1/2" collector.
With the cams having so much overlap I will need minimal restriction on the intake/exhaust.

TRDWGN, what sort of mufflers/reso's did your old system have?

Was a Fujitsubo system that had a resonator that was about the size and shape of a cat and a rear muffler, i also added a 2.5in coby in place of cat...

Keep an eye out for HSV resonators on trademe also as they are 2.25 & 2.5in (depending on year) straight thru stainless steel with good sound damping qualities, and usually friggn cheap to buy and near perfect for a 4AGE!

Looks like a lukey Ultra Flo http://www.rpw.com.au/Products/Exhaust%20Products/Mufflers.htm might be the go.

Any idea on when they go for? Trademe seems to be flooded with the N1 designs but piss all decent mufflers.

It's been a while since i brought any but having talked to a few people and finding out a few things it is generally agreed that they go for around $150 each, less than some of those big bling n1 style mufflers :)
Plus they aren't overly large external dimension size wise so they are easy to fit in and keep your pipe work simple :)
