problem: engine won't idle

Postby l1ttle_d3vil » Mon May 02, 2005 10:54 pm

aaahh the progress aye!! the engine will start up and run for about 4 or 5 seconds then die, but it will only do this every so often - never consistently. sometimes it'll start straight away, sometimes it wont even fire.

ive checked the fuel pressure at the pump and also at the fuel rail, and also while turning the engine over. it holds 60PSI consistently at the pump and 50psi at the rail, and continues to hold 50psi while turning the engine over/running until it does.
if i give it any throttle while its idling it just kills it straight away. i sprayed some engine start into the manifold tonight and turned it over and it kinda fired up and when i gave it some gas i could heard the revs lift a bit before it died.
soo the probably is somewhere with my injectors - it seems like sometimes they fire, sometimes they dont. ive held a stethascope onto the injectors and can't hear anything (im told you should be able to hear them clicking as they fire)
i can't see anything wrong with my wiring. what should be wired up, have power going to it and not have power going to it as far as the injectors are concerned? (this is with an ae86 loom). there must be something in the wiring that im missing...

here is what ive got wired up at the moment...

Image

Pin #2/10, Black wire - Injector trigger signal
Presume this goes straight to the injector plugs which are then plugged into the injectors...my brother checked all this wiring and i dont have his notes in front of me at the moment so am only guessing this is right.

Pin #3/10, Black wire - Start signal to ECU, cold start injector and cold start injector timer power feed
There is a wire splicing off this pin/wire and going to the 3-deep plug pictured above. I have run a wire from the appropriate terminal on the 3-deep plug to the and spliced it into the wire running to the starter solenoid.

Pin #7/10, Black wire - Injector trigger signal
As above on pin #2.

Pin #10/10, White wire - ECU Power Feed (shared with injectors)
This goes from the 3 deep plug (pictured above) and splices off to the injectors and also the ECU. I have run a wire from the appropriate terminal on the 3-deep plug to the battery for power. Does this matter if this wire has a constant power feed, or does it need to be run through the ignition?

There is also a black wire running to the 3-deep plug which my brother has labelled "injectors" - i don't know where in the loom this wire is connected to the injectors though - its just been labelled 'injectors'. maybe someone else will know exactly what its for, otherwise i can check it out when im at work next. I have also run a wire from this terminal to the battery for power.

now after you've read the novel of my wiring, is there anything ive missed out which could stop the injectors from getting the right signal?

also, can i put it into diagnostics mode? ive been told you can't do this with ae86 looms but at the same time told i can...

yeaaa, sucks cos theres not many decent mechanics and even less auto electricians around here, and its about 1 1/2 hours to the nearest ones.

i find toyspeed to be closer :P

just incase u wana know, i changed the wiring around a bit. i connected the ecu/injector power wire to the ignition (12v), then the injector trigger signal to an earth and every time i turned the ignition on the fuel poured in and flooded it...it would start and run all good once i got rid of some of the fuel from the hones but wouldn't idle and would die as soon as i turned the fuel pump on.

now i disconnected the earth and just left the ecu/injector power connected to the ignition, turned the pump on and it started up and idled and revved sweet.
it did start to idle a bit slower/rougher after a while though, my brother thinks its possibly because the return line isn't big enough for the fuel pump and its getting too much backpressure. im using a 3/8th feeder line now and the original feeder line off the 3K as the return line (not sure of the exact size). is this possible? ive been told the correct pressure for a 4age should be more like 30 to 40psi. mines running at 60psi at the pump, and 50psi on the actual rail.

but all in all - it seems like everythings fixed!! maybe there will be a red sr sacked on its ass at the burnout comp this weekend  still got a bit to do though...fingers crossed

You have got a bluetop ecu aye?
Have you checked 4 fault codes?

yep, bluetop ae86 ecu, ae86 loom, bluetop engine out of i don't know what! (been converted).

i don't know how to get fault codes out of ae86 looms/ecus. ive been told you can't get them from an ae86 loom as you can't put it into diagnostics mode.
