small port red top into ae 82 fxgt

Postby trdfxgt » Thu Jul 07, 2005 1:49 pm

hey my blue top 4age has finaly said good by so now i need to replace it i have managed to get a red top 100kw small port after doing much reseach iv found out i can simply use the small port block put my big port head on it block the oil return and or make a oil return in my head.. plug it in and go easy !!! but all this will do is mean i will have the same output as i did but with a stronger block and oil cooled pistions etc what i want to know is has any put a hole red top engine into a blue top car with the factory computer ??? making use of the small ports ? to look at the manifolds are very similar but for a couple of plugs missing on the red top manifold can i use the blue top manifold with the red top head minus the tvis ??? and also use the red fuel rail and bigger injectors ??? these are just thoughts but has any one done this or know if this is possable???

cheers

use the complete smallport engine and get the loom and ecu to go with it.
anything else is gunna loose you a good feature.
the best thing about the smallport is the head. you really want to use that if you can

I know a guy using a small port block with a big port head. Mind he is going to use it for racing and using 272 intake and 264 exh by kelford cams.

The small port ports are slightly too small, the big port heads are slightly too big. Once you start making more HP the big port becomes ideal.

If you have a complete small port with wiring and comp i'd use that. If you've only got the block it looks like a good option if you have plans for more power

hehe i dont think many ppl agree on your port size theory there....
i know of one high power small port thats had the ports filled in....

small port is a relative term, they are still big ports!

i understand that the big port head is better for higher output but im talking about maybe 10 or 15 kw over standed blue top power because i have been told the red tops power comes from the smaller ports ? this may be incorrect i dont know so i was more or less curious if it could work im not looking for heaps of power over the red top output just standed red top output so i get 10 or 15 kw over my original blue top keeping a reliable standed motor under the hood ????

then use the complete red top......

the small port also has higher compression.

the redtop is THE BEST ONE. use the redtop!! trust me, its the best option

on this note, would it be worthwhile sticking the 100kw 4age into my ae92?
thinking about when this motor kicks the bucket.

i have the redtop tvis motor at the moment.

how much work to fit the better red top motor in?

not a lot, but you prob need the loom and ecu. however it should all be plug and play

I dont think so. My bigport has ports reduced to considerably smaller than the smallport. It's in effect a mini port, and I dont consider 167 at the wheels an unsubstancial amount of HP considering its still NA. Oh and the head work was completed by a TWR engineer.

My Kelford cams are 300 degree ramp to ramp, 415 thou lift.

For a massive turbo application perhaps the bigport may suit, but every race engineer I know of developing the 4age prefers the smallport.

Yes this is true. I have heard from redmist about engineers have success with even smaller ports.

- The inlet and exhaust ports are quite good standard, but they are a little too big on the big port heads and a little too small on the small port heads. The small port head is easy to make a bit larger, but making the big port smaller is quite difficult, so don't try it - Just clean up all the nasty little bumps & casting marks in the head instead.

red top into ae82

Postby trdnut » Fri Jul 08, 2005 6:58 am

I've done this conversion already on my brothers nz new AE82. Used the complete red top engine and just hooked up the blue top computer and blue top injectors. It went like stink!

misquote! you have not! i was referring to redmists engine, which i thought was a smallport, but as he said above is a bigport with ports filled into even smaller than smallport size. and it was, as he said done by a TWR engineer, not toyota

can you tell me how you went about this ? i can see there are computer plugs missing on the red manifold ????

Yes sorry, corrected.

yeah what about it??? what point is it? I know they will physically fit but what about the fact they are from a 5 valve/cyl head. are they not dished differently?

also if this was a good idea I think it would've been mentioned by someone by now. its not even on 4age.net or billzilla's site etc.

Just buy an aftermarket ecu you know its gonna needed sooner or later

Ive seen the redtop with a bluetop ecu/loom also.
They had to change the injectors and a few sensors I think.

Why would you want to use 20v pistons when the retops pistons are already 10.3:1?
If your planning to up the compression to 11:1 then DONT, unless you have a programmable ecu.
Im running a compression ratio of 11:1 in my bluetop with the standard ecu (for now) and I had to retard the timing so much that it has less nuts than a standard bluetop

put a bluetop head on & give me the redtop head :D

Na, definately keep the redtop head on. Redtop loom and ecu would definately be preferrable. But it can run with the bluetop loom and ecu. You will just have to use the bluetop injectors, sensors, distributor etc but keep the redtop manifold with the redtop head and ditch the Tvis
