Degreaser - brake dust remover??

Postby SkylineObsession » Sun Jul 24, 2005 2:26 am

When i got my puncture fixed today i asked the guy if he knew how to get rid of (15 years worth) the brake dust in the inside of the rim. The outside is easy to clean on the back wheels, but the front ones have a few splotches which won't come off - and the inside of the rims has proved impossible to clean so far. He suggested i try degreaser?

I know you don't immediately see behind the outside of the tyre into the inside of it, but i just really want to get rid of it all so it looks like it did when it left Japan. Just like the complete underside, interior and engine bay (will get them all clean eventually). The former being very dirty.

Anywho. Would this work?

for old rims which have never been cleaned on the inside rim, ive used brush on paint stripper many times. Obvously no good for painted ones, but for plain alloy ive found it great. I use that with a stiff scrubbing brush. Brush on, wait 1-2 mins (not full strip time), scrub and hose.

degreasers can work, but for the stronger stuff an acid based wheel cleaner can be ok,

traditionally you are not supposed to use this on painted wheels but for short periods of time it shouldnt hurt.

what i used to do was spray acid cleaner on , brush the ares withe a stiff brush, then spray citrus degreaser on as this is an alkaline and will help neutralise the acid, then clean off and reapeat as neccesarry.

citrus is very good stuff you can use it for alot of things, including under the hood and under your gaurds, i can get you some if you want it i have a 20 litre container sitting at home, i can try get some mag wheel cleaner cheap as well if you want.

I'm a bit wary about using stuff that could damage the rims in any way but also on spending money on something and having it not work.

Does that citrus spray clean on its own or does it need to be helped by acid?

The citrus spray IS acid. Lots of places sell it, Repco, Butlers, Supercheap, just hunt around. Failing that, just paint your wheels black! 8)

And for the engine bay;

I wrote:And if you want extra bling in your engine bay, I got 2 cans of degreaser from Supercheap, took the battery out, covered the important-looking electrical bits with gladwrap, and went to town with the degreaser. Grab the garden hose with a high-pressure nozzle, and rinse the motor off. It dries faster with the engine warm, then go over black bits with ArmourAll!

also when using the mag cleaner spray stuff its a good idea to keep it away from any plastic bits of the mags. When i used it i got some on the plastic centre cover of the mag and it totally ate through top layer of plastic ruining the centre cover.

im a tyre guy and trust me brake cleaner spray works fully.

spray it on wait like 3 seconds, use a dry rag and rub the desired spot clean.

I have to do it all the time for applying stick on wheel weights for mags
