Legality of spacers, longer studs with 17's

Postby ants_ae92 » Thu Jul 28, 2005 12:03 pm

Hey guys.

Just went to get some mags for my car. They were all sweet to go on, then they tried fitting the back ones, and they didnt fit, not enough clearance with the strut. I have an ae92 levin, and they were putting 17's on there. The offset was 40.

They were going to tap the strut up with a persuasion tool, but they didnt because they said it would weaken the strut cup, and could eventually break.

The question is, they are going to put longer studs in, and then use spacers to get them to fit. They didnt bother to tell me that I wouldn't get a warrant with the spacers, but only if the spacer was welded onto the wheel, and then it would get a warrant?

Is there any truth behind that? What does the law state?

What do you guys think?

Any spacers, whether bolt-on or not, now require certification. :D

Yeah well I probably need certification for he ride height as well, >100mm.
So long as it is certified it is ok?

Yes, BUT they are very strict on what qualifies for certification spacer wise.
The spacer must locate on the centre spindle of the hub.
The wheel must locate on the centre spindle of the hub OR on the centre spindle of the spacer (is not allowed to be a flat spacer like the one they will put on at the mags shop). Can get these made by any good fabricator (can give you the name of one) or by a place such as arrow wheels that generally fabricate their own wheels.
The nuts MUST turn on a minimum of four complete turns onto the studs, preferably by hand. (Hence longer studs)
As for welding I would call a certifyer before trusting this!
I was never told I could weld when I got mine done!
PM me if you want some contact details of people to call
Cheers

They don't sell many wheels in 35 offset (like 5 sets in the whole store). 40 was the most common. Yeah the spacers were not ones that attached to the hub, they were just flat universal spacers.

Whats the name of the place, im in west auckland?

Yeah it was mag warehouse. I was just gona tap the strut but I guess its a no go.

Ring Freelance automotive and ask to speak to Lance, thats on Moselle Ave (off Lincoln Road). Number 09 8380223.
Hes the guy that certed my car for me.
If he says no to welding them on, let me know and I'll give you the number for my fabricator mate that made my spacers for me.
All good man

The tyres were 205's I think, I will have to check.

Thanks for the number, I will give him a ring and see. Might try ringing the ltsa as well.

Yeah well I think I will have to get some made up which fit to the hub as well. We will see.

Yeah they were rubbing on the spring holder part. Also I replaced the struts with some sealed units from monroes, and I think the cup is designed slightly differently than the toyota strut.

Thanks for the info guys :)

Just bash the spring seats. If you dont need to bash them too much its not really going to cause any damage.

Looked at the old Tems struts and they are different. The old toyota strut has a flat/horizontal spring seat. The aftermarket monroe strut has a triangular (greater strength?) spring seat which is why they didnt fit. Otherwise 40 offset would have fitted.

Fraud, how much did your hub centric spacers cost you and where from?

Don't buy the wheels unless they fit properly! You're paying good money for some wheels and you should be given the right ones!

38 or 35 offset wheels arn't rare!
