did you push the caliper piston/pistons back before trying to put it back into position.

caliper brakes are self adjusting, so the pistons move out as the brake pad wears

yea the piston has been pushed all the way in, and the brake pad thats on the inside is not the problem as it can be pushed beyond the point of no return so that the rotor hits the caliper itself, its the brake pad on the other side that seems to be the problem

also i undid the niple thingie to let the pressure out so i could push the piston all the way back, does this mean that i have to bleed the breaks or should it be fine, and only need to bleed breaks if the hose is taken off? thanks

if you undid the bleed nipple you will need to bleed the system.
it good practice when doing a pad change anyway.

from memory i had the same problem, the thing we found was the other side screwed in, before you put the pads on- if that makes sense?

You might also find that the caliper is sticky on the rods that they slide onand they just need a bit of lubing so they move freely.
See ya

so by saying that i presume that the entire caliper can be spread open more? so that the outer brake pad moves further apart, if thats the case then the issue should be sorted, do you have to tighten/loosen the bolts on the rods? or should just pushing it apart do the job? i dont want to try force it open more if its not meant to

cheers

Don't take this the wrong way, but should you really be doing your own brake work if you are getting stuck on something as basic as this? We all have to start somewhere, but usually an idea to get someone who knows what they are doing to take you through the process of what to do. Then you'll know when you do it yourself.
